It's difficult to find non-recycled material in MBA admissions books/ebooks/articles. Just about everything I had read in the past seemed like it was just lifted from somewhere else and slightly modified. After about a year and a half of immersing myself in this pre-MBA world, I felt like I had read everything I could on MBA admissions.I was wrong. After I got through the first few pages of this book, I knew it was something completely different from what I had read in the past. Of course, there were some ideas that I had seen before, but there was so much new material and many answers for questions I couldn't find elsewhere (I'll be participating in a feedback session from a school I got dinged by last year - this book gave suggestions on how to approach that and even what to ask!)Not only is it a valuable resource for just about any type of applicant (over-represented groups and military applicants take note - there are specific sections just for you!) but Linda backs up a lot of her advice with examples of essays that put her advice to work - so much so that after reading a few of her examples, I learned that I could be approaching my essays a bit more creatively so that they'd be more interesting to read but convey the same message of my prior essays. This style change led me to say what I wanted to say last time around even more efficiently so I had space to add even more - more than that, I felt that the new essay is much more fun to read. The only thing I'd say that was a drawback to this book was the formatting. I purchased the Kindle version of this book and noticed some formatting issues on the first page of each chapter. It doesn't detract too much from the experience of the book, it was just something I noticed. For as much as a price break the Kindle version is compared to the actual book, if this is my only complaint - I'll take it.A lot of people refer to the Official Guide for GMAT Review as the gold standard of GMAT Prep. Until now I hadn't come across a book so comprehensive that I'd give it the same title for the actual admissions process, but MBA Admission for Smarties is definitely that, this is the most comprehensive, most up-to-date, most informative, and best written (a pretty fun read, as far as MBA books go! I finished this book in just a few days) MBA admissions resource I have come across. I would not hesitate to recommend this book to anyone that is considering or in the process of applying for their MBA.

I just finished reading few chapters of "MBA Admission for Smarties" by Linda Abraham and Judy Gruen and must admit that it is a one of the best book available on market. Before reading this book, I had read one another book by renowned one (I don't want to name the book or author) but that book didn't appealed to me in such a fashion as "MBA Admission for Smarties" did. This book simply made me to think, think about why MBA, about my goals, etc.I know all these are the very basic things for someone who is thinking about MBA but seriously I had never thought about why MBA? Yes, it was always in my mind that I want to go for social entrepreneurship but this book made me to think what functional location you wants in the organisation, what would be my short-term and long-term goals with respect to entrepreneurship stint? What would I be able to contribute to the organisation?I liked the way authors described the whole book in stories related to the real life. I must admit that I can see myself or my condition in almost every story. I started thinking about MBA about 3years back but even after 3years I only knew that I want to work as a social entrepreneur but within social entrepreneur what would I be doing, I didn't know and hardly thought about it. It's really difficult to just read the bunch of advice without relating those to real life but this book has done a wonderful job by relating it to real life stories. This book made me to think "Goal is something you want to do, not study." Also, your goal must be credible and you must not only decide what industry you want to work for but also the function. This book also made me to think why I do want to work as social entrepreneur? Where do I excel as a social entrepreneur? What unique I can bring to the class? Book really pushes you to think about your goals, dreams in the different perspective - the way you might not have ever thought about. "MBA Admission for Smarties" makes you really take a step back and look at the whole picture, with clear, step-by-step guidelines in each area of the MBA application process and specific tips and examples along the way.I also liked the detail about school selection, resume building and essay writing - what to write and what not to write and how to be true to you. Book is very informative and useful for everyone thinking about MBA and will let you know where you stand in relation to the requirements for admission. Another aspect of the book is it is quite straightforward - No-Nonsense Guide to Acceptance at Top Business Schools! I am quite sure that "MBA Admission for Smarties" will give one an edge over others and make one shine in the eyes of admission committee.I've just read few chapters of this book and once I will finish it, I will write more about the book and my experiences while reading it. Till that time one can check and order the book at MBA Admission for Smarties: The No-Nonsense Guide to Acceptance at Top Business Schools

The book covered the different aspects of a B school application such as the essay writing, LOR, etc. it introduces you to the procedure of application and gives you a sense of what you need to do to secure your spot in a top B school. But I found that it was quite generic and a one size doesn't fit all philosophy applies here as well. It does not provide you with all the answers you're seeking when it comes to your B school application having your individual story. So to sum up, I recommend this book to people who are looking forward to pursuing their MBA and have just begin their preparations. For people already familiar with the application procedure and expectations from B schools , this book wouldn't help you.

The book is a very thorough guide for anyone applying to business school, providing helpful tips from former admissions professionals. It is written in a straightforward style including examples that demonstrate the key points. Highly recommend.

Great book to get an idea of the admission process, I really recommend it. Good advices and excellent guidelines to consider in your application.

I was very please with the information. Help me to fill out application successful. It came just in time for my son to use in fillinging out his application for university

I read this book at the recommendation of a friend, and I found it fairly interesting. It's basic thesis is that there are many different kinds of intelligence (spatial, for example; musical as another example; linguistic as a third), and that everybody is intelligent in at least one (usually more) of these categories. In reading the qualities of people who fall into any of the categories, I recognized many, many people I know: they are, indeed, intelligent in that particular way or ways. In turn, they would probably recognize me as falling into one or more of the categories, being weak in others.I felt the major strength of this book was to convince people that intelligence is not limited to words, facts, numbers. Throughout our long history, we humans have had to be intelligent to survive, and only in the last 300 or 400 years has the concept of intelligence been narrowed to verbal and mathematical intelligence. Parents of school kids who don't do well in math, say, or language skills, might use the information in this book to see that their kids are intelligent in other ways, and to praise and encourage that intelligence, and nurture it.

Dr. Armstrong's "Seven Kinds of Smart" is written and researched by The Teacher who really gets it: A person is unique and has uniquely different ways of learning. Each person has his/her own style of accessing and absorbing information. The diifferent senses use different learning tools for each, or a combination of each. Dr. Armstrong is The Teacher who developed these approaches to teaching and learning. Dr. Armstrong's book is very readable: enjoyable, clear, easy-to-follow, interesting. You aren't aware that you are being taught. It is vastly superior to the Howard Gartner writings on the same subject. Dr. Armstrong identifies SEVEN different pathways: Verbal, logical, spatial, musical, touch/kinesthetics, interpersonal, intrapersonal. Peter Drucker, the famous economist, who taught at the Claremont Colleges, wrote in one of his last books that he first determined whether his listener, student or recipient of his communications learned by audio or visual means in receiving information (slightly different from the verbal and musical classifications of intelligences Dr. Armstrong identifies), before trying to communicate with that person. He felt you could not communicate with someone unless you first made this determination. For instance, does your boss "get" your message from something written, i.e. is he/she eye-minded; or does he/she "get" your message best if you speak to him, i.e. is he audio-oriented"; or does he get it best if he is watching you and having things demonstrated to him, i.e. is he/she touch or tactile oriented? Dr. Armstrong helps the reader to understand his/her own best learning pathways and how to use each effectively. He also suggests ways to support our weaker pathways. I view learning and communicating as a multi-pathway experience, not just a one-pathway activity. For instance, I view doing art work as requiring visual, spatial and touch/tactile intelligences. Dr. Armstrong developed his theories of learning as a teacher in Fresno, California. They are sound techniques for learning, teaching, parenting, marketing, and general communication. I recommmend this book as an essential part of understanding how the human mind works, develops and receives new knowledge. It is a wonderful tool for showing us on how to learn new skills and abilities so that we remain mentally young and agile.

I have a couple of Gardner's books. This author is much more reader friendly than Gardner and bases a great deal of the information in his book upon research by him (and duly gives him credit for his groundbreaking research). The basic seven intelligences are: 1) Linguistic Intelligence [words] 2) Logical-mathematical [numbers and logic] 3) Spacial [pictures and images] 4) Musical 5) Bodily-kinesthetic [physical self] 6) Interpersonal [ability to understand and work with others] and finally, 7) Intrapersonal [intelligence of the inner self].This book also introduces two new kinds of smarts (though these seem a bit premature in their research to give full credence to them being new intelligences vs. them being an expansion of the aforementioned seven intelligences). These two newly introduced intelligences include 1) The Naturalist: a person who shows expertise in the recognition and classification of the numerous species-the flora and fauna- of his or her environment, and 2) The Existential: intelligence of concern with ultimate life issues [i.e., What is life? What's it all about? Why is there evil? Where is humanity headed? Does God exist?]. Never-the-less, this is a great book and easy to navigate!

I have not finished reading this book yet but if you are reading this review to see if the book is worth it, it is. Unless you already understand that not all peoples brains operate under a universal set of rules then I definitely recommend this. This book is also out-dated because psychologists now believer there are actually nine (9) kinds of smart. Regardless of recent research it is a great book if, like me, you went through High School being told by teaches that because you didn't do well on Standardized Testing you're not smart.

Great book to help you to better understand, accept & forgive yourself, your family members, your friends & ppl in general. One of a number of great books on this subject.Great for story writers too.

As old as this book is, it makes you think and that is what I wanted the book for. So, for me, the book was just what I wanted.

Review

"This nontraditional narrative, using conversations, interview transcripts, text messages, hospital reports, and other documents, skillfully peels back the elements of the mystery. The issues of football's violence are presented, but the book's real strength is the depiction of the culture behind it....The story will resonate with those on both sides of the debate about the role of youth football in society, and the unusual storytelling technique sets it apart from most sport fiction." (Kirkus Reviews)"Hand this to your reluctant readers who love football; the format makes this an incredibly easy story to navigate and will not intimidate struggling readers." (School Library Connection)"A must-buy for libraries looking for innovative narratives for sports fans. Readers who enjoy Tim Green, Mike Lupica, and Kwame Alexander will want to pick this up." (School Library Journal)"Greenwald’s novel entertains while exposing readers to the potential risks and consequences inherent in the sport of football . . . an interesting, innovative read." (Booklist)"An ideal discussion starter for middle-school readers ready to debate whether football’s—or any sport’s—violence is reason to pull the plug." (The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books)"A must-read for any parent, coach, or young football player." (Midwest Book Review)

While 'Game Changer' is technically a book about football, it's really so much more than a sports story. In an incredibly engaging manner (it's a fun read that flies by) the author illuminates what happens when people are entrenched and unwilling to listen to opposing sides of an issue. This makes 'Game Changer' relatable to all (and sadly, incredibly timely). Sports kids, non-sports kids and parents will relate to the well-drawn characters and the difficulties they face navigating thorny social media—and just plain social—issues. My favorite book I've read this month.

11 year old son gives it 5 glowing stars. Read it in 3 hours.

At the end of summer football camp for the Walthorne Wildcats, Ted Youngblood collapses as he comes off the field and ends up comatose in the hospital. Told in dialogue, texts, interviews and chat boards by Ted's parents and sister, his doctors, his teammates and others from school, we slowly find out why Ted ended up being injured. We also hear from Ted from the underwater depths of his coma. Ted's parents are divorced, so are not always in agreement as to the treatment of their son. Camille, who is the coach's daughter and has an interest in Ted, starts a chat board, but not all of the postings are supportive. One commenter in particular, Clea, keeps bringing up the idea that Ethan, who hit Ted, did it on purpose. As we go back and forth and hear the reactions of the different characters to the events, we find out more about the culture of football in the school and the deep emotional attachment that the characters have to football, and watch as Ted slowly makes his way out of the depths of injury to re enter the world and reflects on what has happened. There has been a lot of discussion lately about the age of characters in middle grade books, and how having one in 8th grade or high school tends to make the book "young adult". I think this is incorrect. 6th, 7th, and 8th graders love to read about high school students, so the fact that Ted is in middle school but participating in a high school camp is brilliant. There aren't many sports books that discuss summer conditioning programs, so it was interesting to read about this one, even if most of the events occurred after the camp itself. The format does make this a quick read, and will make it popular with fans of Alexander's The Crossover or Myers' Monster. Personally, I adore Greenwald's regular narrative style, so would have preferred this to be in a standard format like The Real Us so that I could have gotten more background information. While we don't get a lot of information about each character, we are able to observe a lot of their interactions. With very few words, we get a lot of insight into what the members of the football team are thinking. They love the game, they love the violence of it, and they want to be a part of a group with traditions. They manage to cultivate these things without the coach really understanding what is going on. That was a nice touch-- while it was a little disturbing that the coach didn't know what was going on, it was good to see that he hadn't condoned it and took steps to change the culture after it was brought to his attention.Aside from investigating the highly relevant topic of concussions, this book also touched on the topics of internet citizenship and divorced parents, and scrutinized high school culture with sympathy and insight. Graced with one of the best covers I have ever seen on a football book, Game Changer is a timely look at how a beloved sport might not be serving its participants well. Buy two copies for schools where sports books are popular, because this will quickly wear out!

My sons and I read it. My sons and I loved it. This book inspired some lively conversation and debate in our home, which is what great literature can do.

Wow, I found out that the Old Testament patriarchs WERE NOT really supposed to have multiple wives or get divorced. But King David and Solomon did not know about this prohibition!!! REALLY!!!! And don't get me started on the Essenes.

so interesting. i loved this.

Worth getting them and listening to the lectures. What I like about this speaker is that there isn't a lot of mindless chatter... Everything he says is pertinent to the subject and to the point. I am listening to them more than once to catch the details. The lecturer comes across as very knowledgeable on the subject matter. He balances Christianity and Jewish history in a very informative and non-biased manner. The book that comes with it has the outlines. I find this helpful to go over the high points of the lecture. I have used some of this info in conversation with friends as just interesting historical facts that most people know little about.. it has provided some good ice breakers and people seemed genuinely interested in the topic.

Amazon says that it has been downloaded to my Fire tablet but it won't play. So sick of this thing. I give it one star because it won't let me submit otherwise

I bought my copy at the Audible website. Excellent series of lectures that give the background necessary to understand how the Dead Sea Scrolls and these Essenes fit into the Second Temple Period in late antiquity. The Audible website also includes a pdf file that has material to be read with each lecture. So far, I'm two for two as far as The Great Courses are concerned. When this course is concluded, I intend to purchase more of them. The price is right on Audible.

If you want to move beyond the simple introduction to the Dead Sea Scrolls, there's no better place to go than this course from The Great Courses. The professor is personable and enjoyable to listen to. Some of the material is quite complicated, but I think he does a good job simplifying it so the average layperson can grasp the significance of it all. If you're someone who likes to learn and wants to expand your understanding of what William Albright said was the greatest manuscript discovery of modern times, then this DVD set is for you.

I have to admit that I wasn't sure that the Dead Sea Scrolls were a big enough topic to sustain 24 lectures, but Rendsburg does an excellent job of presenting the story of the discovery and publication of the scrolls, what the scrolls themselves say, the Jewish world that surrounded the scrolls, and their importance for our understanding of Judaism and Christianity. The author is also admirably balanced, giving multiple sides of disputed questions. He treats non-standard and more extreme views fairly, while explaining and justifying why the moderate or mainline position (which he generally holds) is the correct one.

I loved this series. The professor was most engaging and presented the information in a very clear and helpful manner. Would love to hear more from him on the DSS's.
