Review

"The famous hymn is given beguiling illustrations in this board book."--Kirkus Reviews “This well-known hymn is considered a particularly accessible one for children. Here the words are matched by Stoop's charming pictures painted on wood. Pictures of 'all things wise and wonderful' feature a little girl and her monkey surrounded by an elephant, a giraffe, a rhino, bears, rabbits, and birds. They cavort throughout the day and enjoy the pleasures of the natural world until night falls. With two lines to a sturdy page, this board book will be a nice introduction to the song for the very youngest.” --Booklist

One of my favorite hymns is beautifully illustrated in this book. It's a great board book because you can speak or sing the song lyrics, and there are many animals and other small details that you can point out to your child as you read to them. Naoko Stoop's illustrations will make you feel like a kid again.

This is one of my favorite books ever. I love it so much I’ve begun giving it to children who are baptized at our church. The illustrations are enchanting and it’s the lyrics to one of my favorite hymns.

Object-Oriented Modeling and Design with UML (2nd Edition)

About the Author

In a sense, Jim Rumbaugh and Mike Blaha are two of the "founding fathers" of UML. They invented UML, the basis for UML, along with Booch notation. Their first edition was crucial to the development and adoption of Object-Oriented methods when they were in their infancy. Blaha is a worldwide consultant and is a partner with Modelsoft Consulting, and SentientPoint Corporation. He is active in the IEEE Computer Society. Rumbaugh is a Distinguished Engineer with the Rational brand of IBM and is one of the original co-designers of UML. He is a highly influential author.

UML is still a pretty new notation language which is developing as we speak. An experienced programmer may run into some small ambiguities, where there is no concrete way to do something. There are various names and notations for several things in UML. The capitalizations/small case for state diagrams may not always match up with other books, and some things can be drawn in more than one way. For instance, a pentagon to describe the entire diagram may exist or not be used at all in some cases. The discrepencies not only show the language's slow progression because of many differing opinions of language developers, but it is also a good indication of how difficult it may be to notice and understand how functions and drawings are to be interpretted between books and software usage. What's also interesting is that Rumbaugh has written various UML books, so he is aware of many of these differences. The question is whether authors as a team could only agree on a certain way to write the book, or if Rumbaugh was more in a hurry with the others to just get books done and printed to make money. If Rumbaugh comes out with a book on his own, it may be worth considering strongly! The same could probably be true for Blaha.Like many UML books probably, the book doesn't help you become aware of something like if an interface cannot be pointing to another interface. That is a more simpler example, but there are much more complex case whereas if you do not have a good grip on computer languages, it probably won't make much sense. Even though I cannot expect a book to cover most of these type of things, I think a book can attempt to cover some of these things so that a beginner could learn more easily. Part of the problem is because the language is still developing, and people just want to get books printed. If you know your UML well, here's your chance! You can still pass a course not knowing any of the idiosyncracies, but at a graduate level, it will not be a fulfilling way to learn. The way the book goes over the content it does cover, it does it very well. There are some things missing such as differing ways to show the same things, or it does not elaborate on topics enough that one would probably need to know for a graduate level course.

Had some good stuff, but didn't help me as much as I'd hoped with my problems at work.

buy for class

Good Product. Received in a timely manner.

Good book

A tough read but then again computer science is always a tough read.

I had to use this book for school. I bought the E-book but can only use it on the Kindle for PC. The manufacture limits how this book can be read and this is a PAIN. The content is not overly helpful either and most of the content can be found on via google much faster and with better explanation.

One striking feature about this book is the sheer mass of exercises given for each chapter. OO modelling and designing using UML can be treated as a very high level process. Indeed it is certainly possible to do this, after reading the book. But the authors have striven to make as concrete as possible to anyone new to UML.Just as one example, consider Chapter 3, on class modelling. It has some of the ambiance of the designing of relational tables, if perhaps you are more familiar with the latter. Books on relational design often have many examples and problems, to drive home the concepts to students. Likewise here. Granted, if you do hail from a relational background, the style of object oriented modelling, and the usage of UML with which to express this, will be different from what you are used to.Later in the book, another useful feature is how you are challenged to convert pseudocode UML examples into actual code, C++ or Java. A vital skill. Since often a top down approach with UML is where UML encodes a large picture. But you then have to manually instantiate this as code. So the book gives you lots of practice.By the way - the book also has useful tips on good object oriented practices for both C++ and Java. These arose out of the discussion about UML. But you should consider adopting these practices irrespective of whether you use UML or not.

Review

In these days of fear of the terrorist 'other', reading this measured, intelligent introduction to a time that is all-too possible to imagine recurring, and looking at Lange's photos... may be one of the most useful things one can do this Christmas. "[The] images show Americans of Japanese extraction being relocated to 'assembly centers', labeled and processed like cattle and closeted away in dismal shacks for the duration of the war... No wonder her pictures were never used and disappeared for half a century. "Through her discerning and sensitive eye, Lange's observations of the situation were too real and too critical for the government, and were consequently confiscated. "[T]he bulk of the book is given over to Lange's photographs. Several of these are as powerful as her most stirring work, and the final image of a grandfather in the desolate Manzanar Center looking down in anguish at the grandson between his knees is worth the price of the book alone. "

Mostly a photographic essay, but with two introductory essays of intellectual heft, the work represents probably the most readily accessible adult presentation of the Japanese Internment situation of WWII. The pictures mostly speak for themselves. The introductory essays assign context that is both important and well formulated. What the pictures cannot relate, given by the essays is the nature of the social and legal contexts and the largely defective processes of both reason and juris prudence which allowed the implementation of this travesty to progress.

Anyone who had relatives affected by Executive Order 9066 knows that photographic depiction of camp life was pretty much forbidden from 1942-1944. My family collection of that time consists of my Grandfather's watercolor paintings of Amache, a family photo surreptitiously taken by a Chinese visitor in 1943 and a 1945 softball game at Topaz.I purchased the book hoping to see additional images of Amache and Topaz, my Father's and Mother's respective camps. While I really didn't expect to see them in any of Dorothea Lange's photos, I came to realize that the pictures, absent any geographic landmarks, could easily have been taken in any of the ten camps. Some of the shots appear to have been editorially 'stylized', but I have been told that film speeds and camera shutters of the time were not conducive to candid images. It is clear that I have grown accustomed to a digital age with high resolution and strobe lights. Regardless, I very much appreciate and respect the effort undertaken in finally publishing these censored photos. The ultimate surprise came from a non-Dorothea Lange photo at the beginning of the book. It shows a crowd of Issei and Nisei in San Francisco enroute to the Santa Anita assembly center. The photo not only shows Dorothea Lange holding a large format reflex camera in the background, it also shows my Father, Grandfather and Uncle! But for a man's fedora and a woman's hat blocking them, my Grandmother and other Uncle would also be visible.A cropped version of the picture was shown on the front page of the April 7, 1942 edition of the San Francisco News, so it can be deduced that the photo was taken no later than April 6, 1942.I can only hope that other Japanese American families will be able to identify significant relatives following close examination of these now un-censored photos.

Perhaps the most racist and unconstitutional program the U.S. government engaged in against its own citizens over the past century was the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II. In the first half of 1942 about 110,000 Japanese-Americans - most of whom had been born in the United States and were U.S. citizens, and many of whom had close relatives actually fighting for the country in the U.S. military - were shipped off to ten concentration camps and rather Spartan living conditions in the hinterlands for the duration of the War. This book tells and illustrates much of the injustice of that program, but not in a wholly satisfactory way.As Gary Y. Okihoro writes in his contribution to this book, "As the nation prepared to defend democracy against the threat of fascism, its leaders authorized and conducted undemocratic actions that bypassed and ignored constitutional guarantees and freedoms." It is impossible to justify that irony. The program was conducted pursuant to Executive Order 9066, which Franklin D. Roosevelt issued in February 1942, in the wake of Pearl Harbor. But the seeds of the program long pre-dated Pearl Harbor. One of the sorry facts I learned from Okihoro's essay was that as early as August 1936 FDR was advocating that the military compile a secret list of those Japanese "who would be the first to be placed in a concentration camp in the event of trouble." FDR deserves praise for his overall sympathy for the common man and woman, but as regards the Japanese he had a racist blind spot.Based in large part on her famous photographs taken for the Farm Security Administration during the Depression, Dorothea Lange was engaged by the government to document the "relocation" (the preferred euphemism) of the Japanese-Americans. The War Relocation Authority probably hoped that her photographs would generate support for its program, just as her Depression photographs had done for the FSA. But that would have required photographs of happy, smiling, contented incarcerates - subjects hard to find. Plus, Lange refused to be co-opted into promoting a lie. Instead, as a body of work her photographs "challenged the political culture that categorized people of Japanese ancestry as disloyal, perfidious, and potentially traitorous, that stripped them of their citizenship and made them un-American." So the WRA declined to publish the vast majority of Lange's photographs, instead quietly depositing them in the National Archive.IMPOUNDED tells the above tale in three sections. First there is an essay by Linda Gordon about Dorothea Lange that focuses primarily on her work for the WRA. Second is an essay by Gary Y. Okihoro that discusses the history of American discrimination against Japanese immigrants and especially the various manifestations of that racism during World War II. Third is a collection of slightly over 100 of the photographs that Dorothea Lange took in 1942 of Japanese-Americans (a) during the days before the evacuation, (b) being rounded up, (c) living in rather squalid conditions at various assembly centers, and (d) as imprisoned at Manzanar, the largest of the ten camps. Now why do I say the book is not wholly satisfactory? First, as other reviewers have noted, the photographs, as reproduced here, tend to be disappointingly small in size and of middling quality. Some of the more poignant and striking of the photographs can also be found, larger and better reproduced, in "Executive Order 9066" by Maisie and Richard Conrat (which, incidentally, I recommend over this book for those who are primarily looking for photographs of the internment program). Second, both of the authors - Okihoro more so than Gordon - are too tendentious and heavy-handed for my taste. It's a rather small point, and a condemnatory attitude is understandable, but the injustice of the internment program is manifest from any sober, objective recounting of the facts and does not need to be constantly underscored with judgmental cynicism and pathos. I would have preferred that the book left the propaganda to Lange and her more nuanced photographs.

I enjoy all the Manzanar (and other concentration camps) books and have many. Most of my childhood friends and their families were in these camps. Sad time in our history.

Who doesn't want to know all about Dorthea Lange? I will use this as a background for a presentation on this photo-documanist. Lots of information and photos that I have never seen before. Great resource for Japanese Internment.
