I am not going to try to critique one of the seminal books of the 20th century but will limit this review to the format. The book - it was originally published in 2 volumes and probably should still be - is very large and quite heavy. The print is rather small but readable, the many footnotes even smaller but in darker print and so also readable. I don't think I would recommend this edition to anyone with limited eyesight.

Popper's rich and convincing indictment against state religion and limitless power caught in the vacuum of historicist prophecy is unsparing, lucid and enlightening. Plato, Hegel and Marx represent the historicist tradition of social engineering, and their philosophical contributions, though of great importance, have collectively served to undermine the transparency of the open society; that is, real democracy. Of the three, Popper strikes an intriguing affection and pity for Marx, whom he distinguishes from Plato and Hegel as utterly sincere and well intentioned, but a failed prophet nonetheless. Of Plato's logical aptitude and sociological ingenuity, Popper pays due credit. Hegel, however, is a different story altogether. To Popper, Hegel was an arcane and mendacious state philosopher, one who cloaked his philosophy in impenetrable mysticism and specious reasoning. He is given the briefest analysis out of the three, but his worst tendencies echo in the impoverished corners of Marx's epistemology.Plato's legacy and intellectual foundations are not assessed on their terms, but are reviewed in context of preceding historical ideas and institutions. This is fitting for the historical and philosophical conceit of the book, for Plato, like Hegel and Marx, would stake the condition of the present moment as the natural heir to the past. At first sight this claim is perfectly reasonable; however, Plato did not conceive progression as a mere product of linear continuity, but as a thing in itself; history is a kind of living entity implicit in its tradition of chaos. In light of the travesty of Athenian democracy, of Socrates’ fate, and the Tyranny of Thirty, Plato resigns himself to the role of reformer. He achieves this by continuing the Socratic tradition of the dialectic and by mounting a damning charge against and lucid alternative to democracy. Surveying the classes, Plato ascribes qualities to each as the motivation for their existence. His understanding of class and politics suffices for the development of his Republic. Plato’s Republic is a utopian state, but it is by no means, as many have been mistaken in their estimation of it, a unique concept. Plato’s universalism and definition of flux owe themselves to the thought of Heraclitus, and his admiration of asceticism and defence are, by his own admission, qualities unique to Spartan culture. The theoretical aspect of this formula is embedded in Euclidean geometry, with a particular emphasis given to symmetry; hence Plato’s ability to resist change. The Republic is already perfect; any further change is a negative. It is unquestionable and unalterable in its finality. This is Popper’s bone of contention: piecemeal social engineering is natural, utopian engineering is not. Plato has no illusions about the imperfection of human culture, but the Republic on its own terms is a flawless construct; it therefore supersedes and tames the baser attitudes of the undesirable enclaves that live in it. The classes are categorically distributed according to their virtues and desires. By stratifying society in such a way, Plato hoped to remove the corruptive elements of self-interest and political upheaval. To Popper, this brand of social engineering is as absurd as it is dangerous. Popper’s interpretation of Plato’s closed society is the essence of his critique against historicism and a so-called perfect society.Given that Plato and Hegel are distanced by 2000 years of history, it may well appear that Popper’s undertaking of establishing intellectual continuity between the two is as ambitious as it is unlikely, but the enduring qualities of Plato’s epistemology lie in the roots of Aristotelian philosophy. Platonism was briefly rehabilitated in the neo-Platonist movement in Ancient Rome, but his body of work did not have the same effect upon Christians and the Middle Ages the way Aristotle did. Of course, Aristotle was a student of Plato in Ancient Greece, and he impressed his master’s more admirable traits; that is, his treatment of aesthetics, logic and reason, if not his political and moral philosophy. Aristotle, too, synthesized his formula for a stable polity, which manifested in his sexpartite model. Continuing that great Grecian tradition of the dialectic, Aristotle juxtaposed the valuable systems of governance against their natural evils, for example: Kingship is virtuous, a dictatorship is not; Politeia is admirable, democracy is corrupt. Once the optimal system of rulership has been established, it is an ultimate good. Proceeding from this theme, Hegel wrests Platonism from ancient history and distils it through the filter of 19th century governance. How do we qualify the best system, Hegel asks? What it is it shall be. The validity of ruling lies in its actual sources and operations, not in its normative aims. This forms of the basis of what’s known as moral positivism. This is deeply troubling, as this brand of moral positivism is an exercise in power enjoyed by the few, the privileged, and the ruling. This state of mind allows for a preponderance of the worst elements of state abuse, particularly the emphasis on war among as nations, which Hegel warmly endorses as an endearing trait of a nation’s character. Hegel’s historicist outputs assume a similar form to that of Marx, namely the dialectical triad – a crude plagiarism of Kant’s brilliant work on reason. With the totalitarian logic laid down by Plato and refined by the state philosopher Hegel, Popper brings us to the final prophet of historicism: Marx.Marx, Popper claims, is unusual in the annals of the historicist school of thinking. It is undoubtedly true that Marx was a classical adherent of its core tendencies, and he, like Plato and Hegel, prophesied that the essence and meaning of human existence could be traced back to a single concept, but he was, unlike his predecessors, his own man. While Plato and Hegel were unequivocally servants to and expositors of formal power, Marx was quite the opposite. For Marx the terminus of capitalism was nearing its end; it had governed in human affairs since time immemorial and was the driving force behind the impression of power and oppression of the masses. Despite his persona sharing the same lofty historical quarters as Smith, Ricardo and Keynes, Marx’s economism was thin gruel. This was particularly self-evident to Lenin, who declared that proceeding from a Marxian framework would be a road to nowhere. Marx’s system of economics was polemical and reactionary, but despite his epistemological contributions to the social sciences, Marx had not developed a logically consistent manifesto of economics. His theory on market value, which included production and consumption, was terribly inconsistent, as was his critique of labour and consumption. It is true, Popper notes, that Marx’s critique of industry and capitalism more broadly had substance, but his alternatives were wrought with errors of empiricism and historicism. The factory line was microcosmic in its composition of all that was wrong in civilization, and Marx propped up the perils of the downtrodden working class as victims, but, eventually, beneficiaries. Far from being the scourge of mankind and freedom, as conservative populists contend, he was an intelligent and intuitive man, but a terribly misguided one. Unlike his forefathers, Marx believed in the common will of the people; a quality Popper obviously admired in him.The Open Society and its Enemies is, in short, an absolute masterwork written by an eminently moral thinker. Please buy this book.

I am no expert of philosophy or economics and so I am unsure of my right to label anything a classic. That said, I found this work really fascinating because it cogently brought together views about ethics, individualism, science and politics in a way that was novel and relevant to me.How do Plato's views of collectivism and a political "Republic" contrast with the method of questioning and individual responsibility espoused by Socrates? How does Kant's system of duty contrast with Hugel's dialectics? Why is Marx simultaneously relevant and yet utterly wrong judged on bases he could hardly object to as a truly innovative social scientist? How do these philosophies relate to each other and social and human progress through time?If these questions and a really heartfelt defense of western liberalism plus a logical argument against relativistic philosophical thinking are questions and themes of interest then I would recommend the book. Warning: the initial chapters are fundamental but I found them to be a bit dense.

I read this book at age 27 and understood little of it. I read it again at 35 and began to understand it. I read it again at 41 and breathed it in like fresh air. I have just read it again at 48 and find so much more in it than I found even at the last reading. This is a book to be read and re-read, deeply understood, and mined for it's multitude of ideas and arguments. 5 stars indeed - I love this book.

I found this book difficult to read and it took me a long time to finish. The book is a masterpiece and i have learned a lot through reading it. I would recommend it only to those with strong motivation to read complicated books.

Though I prefer his first volume, that may be a matter of taste. I have loved the ancient Greeks since childhood and had believed since college that the celebration of Plato as a political philosopher was an error. But, reading Popper's take down of Hegel and Marx in vol. 2 is like watching J. J. Watt take down a quarterback. It is one of the most important philosophical books of the 20th century, far exceeding many far more famous ones.

I'm still reading, it is quite long. It is an interesting description how we love our liberty but not the liberty of others. I would recommend it for those interested in the current evolution of political systems and societies worldwide.

This deep read and analysis of the roots of totalitarianism, historicism and government begins be delving deeply into Plato's Laws and The Republic. Your perspective on the meaning of these works and the origins of the Nazi Germany, the distinction between Big Government and Communism will likely never be the same. A man who claims he learns nothing from this book is either in deep denial or a complete fool.

This book is great for cat lovers who need help developing some coping skills. My five year old loves cats and he thought this book was great. We practiced all the things the book suggests as we read it, such as breathing mindfully and stretching like a cat. This book helps to reinforce ideas that we're trying to teach him.

As a psychologist who works with children, I'm often looking for books and games that can be used in child therapy. I purchased the book because it looked like a practical and creative way to teach children some relaxation skills. It turns out to be not as instructive as I was imagining. I was expecting suggestions about specific movements that cats make that children can imitate to help them relax. I guess I was expecting some yoga-type poses or specific stretches. Instead there are more abstract suggestions, such as being assertive or playful (with sketches of cats behaving in these ways). The book is shorter than I expected and I was hoping for colorful pictures, as bright colors often catch children's attention. The line drawings are quite lovely but they're in a very muted brownish color. It's soothing but not quite what I was expecting based on the colorful book cover (which I found to be very appealing). I think I can find some ways to use it in my work, especially with children who are fond of cats, so I'll hang on to it but I can only give it 3 1/2 stars..

Given as a gift.

language not child friendly, dated overall

Great book for kids to learn how to de-stress.

Great! It is as posted and is being used in the study it was ordered for. Thank you for the product.

What a great little book! In my role as a counselor, I have used it several times with kids so far to help them use their knowledge or interest in cats to help them learn and practice de-escalation skills.Well-worded text, cute drawings, and a few summary pages at the back to possibly post on the wall as a reminder for kids to use their new skills.Recommended!

This is a great book for kids and adults. It goes beyond many of the usual stress management techniques with an emphasis on self-esteem and standing up for yourself. Children have so much stress these days. This simple, easy-to-read book gets right to the heart of ways to help the children we love. I have a copy to read for myself and my 7-year-old daughter. I have bought copies for the library for people (and families) with cancer and chronic illnesses where I work - high stress situations. I also recommend it in a stress management class I teach at a local hospital for kids. Parents and kids alike are drawn to its message.

Review

In a world where people of faith are tempted to take up violence to protect their convictions and cultures, these martyrs show how genuine power is made perfect in weakness. This book is a gift to the entire church. (Gerald J. Mast, Bluffton University)Christian martyrdom and costly discipleship are not confined to some legendary past. With vivid storytelling and reliable sources, this book teaches us about nonviolent love in the face of opposition and challenges us to take risks for the gospel today. (J. Remarkable stories! Every Christian should read it.

I’ve always enjoyed tales of Christian history. I find myself edified by hearing the discussions over doctrine, the stories of the spread of the gospel and the stories of those who have suffered or died in Christ’s name. So, when I received the opportunity to review Plough Publishing House’s new book, Bearing Witness: Stories of Martyrdom and Costly Discipleship, I was sure that it would be a book that I would enjoy reading.I was not to be disappointed. Bearing Witness is a book that traces four periods of Christian history with martyr stories and stories of those who were persecuted for their religious beliefs. Although I wouldn’t classify all the martyrs covered as Anabaptists, the book does focus on martyrs of the Anabaptist tradition. The book is separated into four sections. The first covers early Christians such as Stephen, Polykarp and Perpetua. The second section deals with martyrs of the reformation such as William Tyndale, Jakob and Katharina Hutter and Dirk Williams. The third section is the early modern witness, including martyrs and persecuted Christians such as Ahn Ei Sook, Gnadenhutten, and Veronica Lohans. The final section covers such people as Clarence Jordan, the Wurmbrands and Sarah Corson. Not all of the people are equally famous, but what is equal is their passion for Christ and willingness to give all in his service. The stories were not equal in length. Some stories are only a couple of pages, and others are quite lengthy. Some stories are also more engaging than others for me. There were a couple of times with the conscientious objectors that were persecuted where I was literally saying, “Come on, guys. Just go work on the farm and grow the plants or be part of the medical unit.” However, an important cornerstone for much of the Anabaptist movement is nonresistance and pacifism. As such, doing that would have violated their consciences and been a sin for them. However, because I don’t share that conviction, it was so frustrating, even for me as a Christian, to see them suffer what I would feel was needless persecution. The chapter at the end on Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa a Nigeria and their persecution by Boko Haram discusses how many martyrs there are as a result of the Anabaptist pursuit of nonviolence. Many of us Americans think of martyrs as a thing of the past or as an isolated incident, and yet the evidence of this book and others like it prove that danger in Christian service is a constant danger for many Christians around the world. This is a book best read over time. I think that one or two of the stories a day would be a great balance from this book so that you have time to digest and think about what you’ve been reading. As a homeschool mom, I intend to put this book on my shelf to share with my children in their high school years as part of their education in church history. It’s a great resource for learning about martyrs of both the past and present.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received one or more products or services mentioned above for free in the hope that I would mention it on my blog. This is one book that will challenge all your notions of what it really means to be a Christian. You may not agree with the moral teaching imbedded in each of the stories LeBlanc selected, but they will captivate your mind and move you to earnestly think about what being a Christian means personally to you. From the very brief "Biographical Sketch," we see that Tolstoy was apparently a tragic figure who, in spite of much success, was "plagued with suicidal thoughts" until he took a "look beyond his own circle" and "noticed that the peasants, despite their poverty, had an instinctive sense of life's purpose. Their faith in God and simple labor propelled them to live. And then it dawned on him: he too only lived at those times he believed in God. It was a decisive conversion experience, after which never left him" (p.xiii-xiv).However, he left the Church when it ordered praying for the utter destruction of Russia's enemies "with sword and bombshell." Tolstoy outspoken pacifism influenced men like Gandhi, Shaw, MLK, Jr. He made sacrifices giving up his wealth, profits, property, and even breaking with his family that would throw him and his wife into constant battle. He renounced all of his publication rights and signed all his property to wife and children. The writing selected reveal a man who saw the sharp inconsistency of the teachings of Christ and the way Christians believed and lived. It seems many of the stories are of persons seeking for a purposeful and happy life but failing until they come to realize that "To know God and to live come to one and the same thing. God is life" (p.43).This is not a book for the Christian who is too lazy to seek for why God put him where he is, or for one too enamored with his own self and possessions to care for others, too attached to his own theologically moral and ethical, and, yes, even his political presuppositions...but, wait! No, maybe that is just the person who should read this book...the lazy, the self-absorbed, the purposeless, the know-it-all, the seeker.I believe these selections of Tolstoy by LeBlanc will keep you thinking and thinking, struggling to come to some satisfying conclusion on just want it means for you to to live the genuine Christian life and how much are you willing to pay to live it.

Bearing Witness: Stories of Martyrdom and Costly Discipleship is a collection of brief biographies that is part of the Bearing Witness Stories Project, a collaborative project of Anabaptists that continues the tradition of telling the stories of costly discipleship that began with Thieleman van Braght's 1685 collection of martyr stories, Martyrs Mirror. While Martyrs Mirror remains inspiring and relevant for the stories of Christian discipleship, it doesn't include the testimonies of the Anabaptists who have also suffered for their faith in the years since 1685. That's what makes Bearing Witness such an important collection. When I first read this collection, my immediate response was one of being driven to prayer in thanksgiving. These stories tell the life of faithful discipleship from the Church's earliest days (Stephen, Polycarp, etc.) to the stories of those of the Radical Reformation (John Hus, William Tyndale, etc.). But there are more modern stories here, and stories of lives lived throughout the world (from the Virgin Islands to the Congo to Romania). What you find here is a testimony of lives that point to the King of kings and Lord of lords. Lives that live and die in testimony to the Prince of peace.Bearing Witness is an important spiritual discipline for the contemporary church, because it's here that we learn to tell the story of Jesus in real, every day lives. That makes Bearing Witness a book not to be missed.________________I received a free copy of this book from Plough Publishing in exchange for my honest review here.

This book has been more help than I can ever state. From working with teens to my own family, I have utilized the advice more times than I can mention. Recently at the passing of a close family member, the immediate family sat around the table reading the section on normal symptoms of grief and stated which ways EACH PERSON thought they were grieving. They then understood how to better respond to one another's individual methods of grieving. WONDERFUL book --highest praise!

just what I needed

Really geared more towards clergy than anyone else. I was hoping to find more insight in how I could help others as a friend, daughter, wife, and friend.

Exactly what I needed and wanted...although I have only had time to look at parts of it...

This book helped me sort out some of what was reality or panic in the dimness of my darkest hours.

I just finished this book. It's a good read. If you are a Stephen Minister it is well worth reading.

I have a heart for people and selected this book based on this and my education in Social Work. I wasn't prepared for the depth of this book, it is a heavy read and does take some time to work through. While it is done in an easy style it can be hard to digest everything in one reading. I would suggest if you are reading this to minister to others that you read through it once and then as each crisis arises then flip to the section you need. It would be impossible to remember all the great and relevant information by reading it only one time. There are many sections, such as, illness and hospital visitation, crisis, aging, death (within death it includes suicide, SIDS, miscarriage, infertility, violent death, among others), grief, troubled marriages and divorce, addiction (gaming, pornography, chemical addictions, eating, etc), domestic violence, rape, and most important forgiveness. There is also an additional section on resources so that additional books with more information on what is covered in Helping Those Who Hurt can be obtained.I would say this book would be great for someone who has a total heart for helping those in crisis whether on a full time basis or even just for the friend or family member who wants to help out one another. Anyone within a pastoral setting would also benefit from this, I have seen pastors try to help but sometimes fall short or make a situation worse without realizing it and I think this book can be an effective to learn fast how to deal with crises that happen in people's lives.

Helping Those Who Hurt, written by pastoral counselor Barbara Roberts, is a very helpful guide to quality and Biblical care giving. It is a comprehensive guide for caring in a variety of settings from hospital visits to domestic violence. Roberts provides significant practical tips to pastoral caregivers in nine different areas of care giving as well as ways to identify and understand dynamics in each of those nine areas: illness and hospital visitation, crisis, aging, death, grief, trouble marriage and divorce, addiction, domestic violence, and rape.Within each topic is a variety of lists describing issues to be aware of and ways of providing care appropriate to the situation. For example, in the chapter on domestic violence, Roberts offers a very helpful checklist to help pastoral caregivers determine if a couple is engaged in verbal abuse or lacks helpful conflict management skills. Such lists are helpful to pastoral caregivers as they make initial contacts and assessments of the situation and issues involved with a particular person or persons.Of note, is a very helpful and significant concluding chapter on forgiveness as it relates to care giving and spiritual growth. This volume would be a welcome addition to a pastor's library and for both informal and formal care giving training.
