Review

"A fun online portion of a larger textbook, this site of comparative osteology shows hips and shoulders and thighs and shins and more from all sorts of animals: bear, deer, dog, opossum-all helpfully showcased alongside the human equivalent… Intended as a field guide for forensic scientists to help police crime scene investigators figure out what is human and what isn’t, the photos are just as useful for figuring out what, exactly, the dog has got in his mouth." --SmithsonianMag.com, March 2013 "At long last we now have a well illustrated, comprehensive photographic guide to distinguish human skeletal remains from a wide range of common animal species. Most previous guides to determine whether a bone was human or animal illustrated a very small number of non-human species. This atlas also illustrates a range of butchery marks and includes prehistoric (stone tools) and historic (metal cleavers, saws and knife marks) found on bones. In addition, Adams and Crabtree illustrate both adult and juvenile animal bones as well as adult and sub-adult human bones. This book is a must for the library of all osteologists or biological scientists called upon to identify human and non-human skeletal remains." --William Bass, Retired, Emeritus Professor of Anthropology, University of Tennessee, Knoxville

This book is a must for the library of all osteologists or biological scientists called upon to identify human and non-human skeletal remains.                                                                                      - William Bass, Retired, Emeritus Professor of                                                                                        Anthropology, University of Tennessee, Knoxville In the forensic context it is quite common for nonhuman bones to be confused with human remains and end up in the medical examiner or coroner system. It is also quite common for skeletal remains (both human and nonhuman) to be discovered in archaeological contexts. While the difference between human and nonhuman bones is often very striking, it can also be quite subtle. Fragmentation only compounds the problem. The ability to differentiate between human and nonhuman bones is dependent on the training of the analyst and the available reference and/or comparative material. Comparative Osteology is a photographic atlas of common North American animal bones designed for use as a laboratory and field guide by the forensic scientist or archaeologist. Adams and Crabtree present some of the most common species which also have the highest likelihood of being potentially confused with human remains. This volume will benefit a large array of readers: forensic anthropologists, osteologists, medical examiners or coroners, forensic professionals in law enforcement and academia, archeologists, and students in biological, biophysical, biomedical and paleontological sciences. Key Features * An affordably priced, compact laboratory/field manual, comparing human and nonhuman bones. * Contains almost 600 high-quality black and white images and diagrams, including inch and centimeter scales with each photograph. * Written by the foremost forensic scientists with decades of experience in the laboratory and as expert witnesses. * An additional Companion Web site hosts images from the volume the reader can magnify and zoom into to see specific landmarks and features on bones.

Bought a used version of the book as I prefer to see notes and compare them with my own when I see them. I purchased this book and several others to "self-teach" myself a more proper version of Osteology as I am currently working in a lab where we are working on a modern comparative collection for the Archaeology Department, and eventually the whole college.Book is well made and the introduction and the context's are thorough and to the point, written in an easy to understand language style that doesn't bore the reader. The pictures were wonderful as well, and I had some qualms about the pictures being printed in black and white, as depending on the lighting, some defining features of the bone can be seen. I also found some of the images to be a little small, and some readers may find difficulty observing them in comparison with other images. LOVED that they all had the cm marker and what I am presuming is a penny to show scale.

After reading reviews for previous editions I was skeptical of buying this. The format of the book is a photo atlas arranged by location of bone (skull, humerus, radius etc), and has photos comparing different species of bone that may look similar at first glance. The next section has bones by species. Overall I am pleased with this book but I would offer some suggestions:Problems:1) The captions could be better, more descriptive2) There is no indication that the neonatal, or juvenile bones have lost the epiphyses at some point due to an open physis. An experienced person may recognize this, but its not clear from the cations.(the intro to the book makes clear that the book is intended for an experienced audience, so it is understandable that this may be eliminated for conciseness)Good things:1) The book has a large number of high quality photos (Black and white)2) It included a large number of domestic and wild mammals and some birds and reptiles3) The format is both comparative and species specific systemic osteology, which is helpfulNot so good things:1) For those wanting a detailed anatomic lesson on bone protuberances, tuberi, muscle attachments etc you will nto find that here.2) you will also not find detailed identification of skull bones, just the skull as a whole3) There is no section on how disease can affect bone morphology

This is a useful book for identifying various North American mammals, because there are only a few such books available (another is Miles Gilbert's book on mammalian osteology). A drawback is the limited number of species shown. The pictures of limbs are typically detailed and good quality, although the book is not helpful if one is studying teeth. The book does not efficiently use space because many of the pictures are repeated (for comparison purposes), but this is a minor qualm. This book is currently serving as one of my two main references for the topic.

A better explanation on the difficulty of identifying fragmentary bones, and some photographic examples, would be appreciated. Other than that, I'd say this book is indispensable for anyone who might just be curious as to what kind of skeletal remains they're seeing. And considering the number of cases in which "suspicious odors" are not considered suspicious enough for somebody to investigate (assuming it's just a dead animal, or worse, avoiding having to get involved with the law), more people should indeed be curious!

While the images in this guide are beautiful the content is not reflected in the title. The focus is primarily on domestic animals. There are non of the animals I am interested in. No wolves, moose, bison.

Used it on sme materials. Found it unclear at times re photos and landmark associations.Difficult to work with. Seems like the photos did not show enough. Maybe I'm picky, but some of theolder line drawing keys were more detailed, though less picturesque than the several photo keysin my possession.

This book contains photos of the major bones of a select group of mammals. The photos are on a black background, which isn't great. The scales can be difficult to read. I prefer Animal Skulls by Mark Elbroch, a masterpiece of detail, but limited to skulls. I also like Mammalian Osteology by B. Miles Gilbert, which shows nice photos of all major bones against a white background for a wide variety of mammals.

My daughter is a PhD candidate in anthropology and needed this book for her research. It has been most helpful.

I don't know for sure but I suspect that most adults struggle with anxiety to some extent. There are a lot of potential things to be stressed about in this world - some which can easily be dismissed logically, but many that are genuine concerns that probably will happen. Since this is a universal problem there are many Christian books out there on how to combat anxiety. When amazon vine offered me a book by Max Lucado I was happy to take it. I could use some help in this area of my life. I've read a few by this author. I know he has a solid, Biblical worldview.I expected this to be an encouraging, somewhat lightweight, book that I could enjoy for a few hours, take a little bit out of, and pass along for someone else to enjoy. My first impression of the book did not sway me from this view. The main section is only about 150 pages long, with a good amount of pages blank (between chapters) or devoted to a single large quote. I hate that sort of thing in a book but, oh well, I didn't pay for this anyway. To my slight surprise, despite the blank or 3/4 empty pages, this is a substantial treatment on the subject. Yes, it is encouraging, full of anecdotes and easy to read but it contains practical steps on combatting anxiety. Based on Philippians 4: 4-8 the author patiently dissects a very powerful passage of scripture and shows you exactly what you need to do to derive maximum benefit from these verses.I normally don't think much one way or the other when it comes to the use of acronyms when it comes to teaching (I can't remember a single one to be honest) but Max uses the acronym CALM as a teaching tool to show how to apply these verses.C - Celebrate God's Goodness - "Rejoice in the Lord Always"A - Ask God For Help - "Let your requests be made known to God"L - Leave Your Concerns With Him - "With Thanksgiving"M - Meditate On Good Things - "Think about the things that are good and worthy of praise"He breaks down each verse into understandable concepts that work in real life. I believe I will actually use this acronym to remind myself of the principles here. This is not a heavy theological book. These are simple real-life-applicable instructions for anyone who is willing to apply it. Medicine for a universal ailment. If you take the medicine you will see results. If you acknowledge the truth of the medicine but don't take it you will not see results. If you take a lower dosage, less often you will see lesser results. Surprisingly I have underlined many of the passages in this book that I plan to read over and over. I hope to get this type of thinking into my daily life until it becomes unconscious. Very much like the Gospel, this book will be of great benefit to anyone who simply receives it.Some personal thoughts before I go:One particular passage moved me greatly: "The benefit of being a great sinner is dependence upon a great grace. I found a forgiveness that is too deep to be plumbed, too high to be summited. I have never been more or less saved than the moment I was first saved. Not one bad deed has deducted from my salvation. No good deed, if there are any, has enhanced it. My salvation has nothing to do with my work and everything to do with the finished work of Christ on the cross."This is absolute truth. If you are a believer you should know one thing: God will never be angry with you again. He swore that in Isaiah 54, which comes after you believe in what happened in Isaiah 53. God has a Covenant of Peace with you that will never, ever be removed. When we get that deep down in our souls most of our anxiety will effortlessly evaporate.

This book is wonderful. The title "Anxious For Nothing" isn't a gentle scold on being anxious for no reason. The book acknowledges that there are many things in life that cause us anxiety. Rather, the book is about trusting God in such a way that gives Him control over our anxieties and leaves us exactly that...anxious for nothing. "Because the Lord is near, we can be anxious for nothing."This is my first Max Lucado book, so I was a bit surprised at its actual brevity; only 152 pages of narrative (with every couple pages filled with just a single sentence) with a remaining 70 pages of reflection questions and Bible verses. This is fine, especially if the book is read as part of a study, but I admit I did feel a bit cheated. That being said, I very much enjoyed the counsel of Max Lucado and how it was supported with Scripture in context. (It seems so many Christian writers take Scripture out of context these days.) I found myself jotting down little bits in a notebook and adding a few nuggets to the margins of my Bible. This is by far the best book I have read in terms of a Biblical approach to anxiety that makes sense and is Scripture-based.

"Anxious For Nothing" is yet another great Max Lucado title. This one, as the title mentions, focuses on anxiety. Around 160 pages, the book is a quick read and addresses such topics as:1. Realizing the Lord is in control, regardless our situation.2. The importance of abiding in Jesus during our trial.3. The importance of prayer during our struggle.4. You have the power to choose on what to think about, good or bad.5. Learn to be grateful during your struggle - surely there is something good that can come out of it.6. Realized how merciful and loving God is to us, regardless our circumstances.7. Fret less and believe in Jesus more.A great read for anyone going through a struggle and in need of hope. You should be able to complete title in a few sittings and come away with more encouragement and hope that is found only in Jesus.

When I see the name MAX LUCADO my interest is captured. When I ran across ANXIOUS FOR NOTHING: FINDING CALM IN A CHAOTIC WORLD, I ordered it immediately. I have run across many in my life that struggle with anxiety. I think if we were honest, most of us do in one form or another, at different times in our lives.ANXIOUS FOR NOTHING goes beyond what the title may first bring to mind. Anxious comes in many levels. We all have feared, worried, wanted to know what is going to happen ahead of time. Wondered if we are making the right decision, if the decision we make is the right one.ANXIOUS FOR NOTHING gives practical and Biblical ways to reduce fear, anxiety and uncertainty. I am three fourths of the way through the book, and so excited about what it contains I had to stop and write a review. Whether you believe you have a large or small issue with anxiety, or perhaps know of someone that does, ANXIOUS FOR NOTHING will be a benefit to your life. A must read by all, and one you will wish you had the funds to purchase a book for everyone in your life.
