I really enjoyed this book. The writer intersperses her travelogue, of her attempts to buy a boat and row it down the Nile from Aswan to Qena, with interesting anecdotes about 18 and 19th century visitors to Egypt, such as Florence Nightinggale and Flaubert. She remarks on the changes since that time, and the similarities. She writes quite entertainly and I was sad when she finally pulled up in Qena and ended her trip. I particularly enjoyed her descriptions of the Nubians she met in Aswan, Amr and his sister.Having returned from a trip to Egypt last year, I strongly related to much of what the author wrote about tourism in Europe as well as feeling "trapped behind a pane of glass" when floating down the Nile in a cruise ship, completely removed from the beautiful pictures you see on all sides. Like her, I was more interested in the everyday Egyptian people than the ancient monuments, but Egyptian tourism is designed for only one type of tourist.She writes forthrightly about the role of women in Egyptian culture, without the careful PC-ness of an anthropologist. She bravely states her opinions. Her conversations with Egyptian men echo my own - the inevitable turning of the conversation to marriage and/or sex, but she explains why this occurs, and I wish I read this in advance for a better understanding of how to handle such things (i.e. end the conversation or turn it in another direction). She challenges the people she speaks with, listening to them and then giving her own point of view. It's pretty interesting! She's also a brave pioneer. You can't imagine how challenging it is to buy a boat and simply row it up the Nile until you read this book. No one wants her to row alone and of course the police would never allow it, so she has to evade them as well.This book is a great travelogue but it would also be excellent for any future female visitor to Egypt, to understand how you are perceived there and why you will be treated as you are. Besides, she describes places in Egypt so beautifully - I regretted never seeing Elephantine Island.
The author is such a great writer that she brought me to tears of joy in the first eight pages of the book as she speaks of her endeavor to row a boat down the Nile between Aswan and Qena a distance of 120 miles. Cultures meet and blend with the ebb and flow of the river Nile unchanged in some places by the passage of time. The author seeks freedom in a land that yearns for freedom as she maneuvers between two cultures and the danger of being alone.
I loved this book. Rosemary Mahoney has an amazing ear and ability to reproduce voices--the characters she meets leap off the page.There are many keenly interesting aspects to this book: the physical feat and determination it took, the lives of people of the Nile of southern Egypt and how they see the droves of tourists, the historical reactions of Flaubert and Florence Nightingale to their days on the Nile, and the wonderful ending that clicks the whole story into place.Every single one of the many friends to whomI have referred this book enjoyed tremendously.
Why anyone one would consider doing this regardless of sex is strange-- but for a woman to do this is beyond "strange" considering the culture she faced. She has a good eye for seeing and sensing things and her word pictures are quite illuminating. Even after reading the book, which I did find interesting especially pertaining to the Egyptian culture, I still came away with the "why" question. Her story could have been over almost before it started. She was gutsy and smart but also very lucky.
This is a cute little true adventure book about a lone American woman who is a rowling enthusiast, wants to row down the Nile River from its source to the mouth. She meets resistance everywhere she turns, so there are many good stories of how she is able to navigate, not only the river, but the roadblocks thrown up by officials, tribal ppls, sleazy men, and others, before she is able to embark on her solo trip. Quite interesting read! I was scared for her!

The author is definitely a stranger in a strange land as she negotiates the cultural complexities confronting a single American woman afoot in Egypt, having the singular goal of buying a rowboat and rowing the Nile. Her nights alone on the river are chronicled in a clever, funny, self-mocking narrative of her paranoid flights of fear and angst, incorporating every scary, hair-raising anecdote she had ever heard/read/imagined about crocodiles, snakes, scorpions and Egyptian men. But she perseveres through the unnerving nights, and with the light of day, finds that she has reached her goal.
