I think that I didn't get the whole concept of this before I ordered it. I thought it was more of a story? But it's 98% photographs. I don't mind because it educated me enough with just that. And, I liked that some of the money for the book helped the org. The book is HUGE. When I buy a house, it'll be kept on my living room table for all to see and gain awareness.

The vender was fine but the book is not what i expected. The description should have mentioned that this is just a book of pictures, and with very little diversity at that. overall, the book is pretty useless except as a way to hold down other stuff while glue drys.

And it is all she has to look forward to after the photographer is gone. A client may be the next face she sees.The portraits are stunning, both the black and white and color photos of these women in their places of work or neighborhoods are testimony to the poverty and desperation of sex slavery and the results of debasing a human being from their inherent God-given right to the dignity of a human person who is loved by our creator.That these women live this life is a damnation of us all. Norman Jean Roy had the strength to speak to truth and photograph these women and create this painful prophetic work that is a call to repentance and action and healing and repair.

This is an excellent photographic work on a tragic and important social issue. The photographs provide a first hand look at the individuals who are effected by traffiking and the sex worker industry. The photographer has respectfully taken high quality portraits of the subjects.Another review gave this book only one star due to the lack of detailed text in the book. That reviewer is correct since the book is composed entirely of photographs, and does not have accompanying text. The last two or three pages provide a brief paragraph describing the specific conditions of each person photographed, but the descriptions are not in-depth. This book could be greatly enhanced if a second edition was published that included a significant amount of text describing the history and current state of traffiking world wide.The lack of text does not diminish this book as being a significant documentary work. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the issue of traffiking. Five stars.

This is an amazing book, filled with heart breaking images of girls in brothels and young girls who were sold into sex slavery. Truly a must have beautiful art book.

This alternate history shows both the good and the bad, the real human desires that make people act as they do from pride, lust, to vanity, boredom and obsession.Ooku volume 5 keeps to the high standards of the rest of the series, which if you don't have, I recommend buying now. Only instead of the story of tragic lovers, as in an earlier volume, or a hard women, keeping the empire together (another volume) here is an examination of how a shogun like so many world leaders, can change over time. Pressured on one side not to adopt but create her own heir, past the point of reason, and swayed not by her own mental illness but the sudden madness of one close to her, our female Shogun makes laws and atmosphere in the Ooku which is soon reflected in the rest of Japan.We follow the female Shojun and the male High Court official, who both start as those who care about the empire, while one may care a bit more about personal gain. But as time continues, and one of the two forgets the Japanese people and empire, and is bored, and so the things that boredom leads to leaves the other to try and pick up the slack.Ooku is unique in that is it telling a history, both the good leaders and the poor ones, but all interesting, and all had their own reasons for acting. But we finish this volume hoping that history can be turned around, not so much that men take over but that the Shogun, or the Emperor cares about the people again, and that corruption and slack become part of the past, not the present ruler.Any thought that this is a dry read, is only because I don't want to reveal plot points and back conspiracies. This is a great work, one which I read as soon as it comes out and I have no regrets in doing so, I only wish Viz added even more titles to the Signiture Line as their selection seems to be spot on.

I absolutely love this series, the characters are well developed and there is so much intrigue and murder and I like how this book took a huge step forward in the search for the cure of the redface pox and it feels like an ending but leaves the door right open for a new chapter. What I really hate is how much time I have to wait for the next book. I do have a tiny complain is that in this book I can see some awfully drawn side characters, it is distracting and I hope it won't happen in the next volume

This volume covers the start of the Chronicle of the Dying Day, an ancient scroll describing the beginning of women rule and the arrival of the Redpox illness. Yoshimune discovers the arrival of a monk named Arikoto and how he evolves in the Inner Chambers.This basically is the idea of the story, the Chronicle continues in the next volume, where we find out more about the Inner Chambers and the rule of the next Shogun. I highly recommend it!

i got this manda for my daughter because the story is very nonWestern. fantastic!she is loving it and we are getting a volume each month.

The more I read this series the more I enjoy it! It is beautifuly drawn and is an engaging tale based on historical facts. I enjoyed learning more about how this world came to be in Japan. I can't wait to see how this story will unfold!

My favorite out of the entire series by far. Probably because this "emperor" seems to have the best back story.

The illustrations are delightfully surreal, vibrant, and engaging. But the book is written in rhyming verse which frequently... fails. Things like rhyming "abeer" with "tree" or "God" with "fraud". The result is a clumsy, forced reading experience which was unsatisfying for both me and my daughter.

I have a toddler who absolutely loves mythological stories. While we gently tried introducing him to Amar Chitra Katha (which was one of my own childhood favorites) we knew that stories and illustrations were geared toward an older child.When I looked online for more age appropriate stories to read to a toddler and help him retain his love for mythology, I discovered this book from Bhakti Mathur. First, the parents love it. The rhyming nature of the story caught my tot's attention and he seems very interested in following the story to the end.Hopefully this will now replace our bed time reading until he's old enough to get back to the Amar Chitra Katha comic books.

Both my 7 and 5 year old girls love this book. They ask me to read it to them often before bed. I love how the author has taken well-known tales and made them easy to understand by children. The colorful and sweet pictures of all the characters really help make them relatable and keep the interest of the kids.

Great content and art - my toddler absolutely adores this book. She asks to read it all the time and knows what Holi is now. Took a star off for the binding and flimsiness of the book. The binding came loose the first time we read it - so now I’m looking for a book sealant to make sure we can keep this book intact

Nice concept and illustrations. The writing style could be better--the meter and rhythm seem awkward at times. Nonetheless enjoyable and nice way to introduce kids to our culture/heritage.

It's really hard to find books and other materials that are appropriate for bicultural kids. My kids are growing up in Australia but I want them to understand their sub-continental heritage and books like this one and the others in the series are great. This book is particularly brilliant because of the spectacular illustrations.My 6 yr old is currently requesting this book every night, and has asked if there are others in the series that he could get for his birthday - there is no higher praise ;-)

Mama, can we read Amma now?I was so pleasantly surprised with the book- the rhyming script and the illustrations are superb.There is such a dearth of of good Indian authors writing books for young children that I can't wait for the author to publish a whole series about the various Indian festivals. Will be on the look out.I definitely recommend that anyone with young kids or even older kids for that matter interested in Indian mythology buy this book. it educated me on some of the facts a bouts Holi as well..

I may come back to revise this review if I get much further into the book, but I'm not confident I'll get past Chapter 5 where I've left it in favour of the Kochan book: Programming in Objective-C (5th Edition) (Developer's Library) title.What's good: mostly clear, straightforward exposition of Obj-C principles with example code available both to download and printed in-line in the chapters.What's bad: this is a 'watch how we do it and listen to the reasons why' methodology, rather than a 'this is how we did this, now it's your turn' kind of book. It's the latter I need, not the former. Reading and understanding how someone else built an arbitrary bit of code to demonstrate a concept is one thing. Actually employing those concepts in a novel project is another.I read the first few chapters of this book and thought 'Yup, I got that', but then couldn't remember what I'd read later on because the book doesn't give opportunities to practice on your own, to struggle with the concepts and to fix them in your long-term memory. I've found the Kochan book does much better at that, giving the reader plenty of exercises at the end of each chapter.Another irritant with this book is it claims you should know C first, which I do. However, at times the book proceeds to waste page space talking at length in baby-language about basic programming concepts that any C programmer will already know. Worse, it then leaves some new Obj-C concepts under-explained. I bought the book for exposition of the latter, not the former.When I've finished the Kochan book, I may come back to this to review/ check my understanding or use as a reference. As a book to learn from though, not so great. The authors should consider throwing in some exercises at the end of each chapter in the next edition.

As an experienced C/C++ developer, I've recently had to ramp up quick on Mac OSX development with Objective-C. With most of the new books targeting iOS and Swift, it's good to have some older books still available that are specific to Mac desktop programming. Hence, the APress book is recommended for developers new to Mac, but experienced on other platforms.You might catch a bug or two in this book. It references XCode 4 when you likely already have XCode 6 installed. Some of the newer language features and simplifications aren't documented in this older book. But for the important stuff that experienced developers need to know like Automatic Reference Counting (ARC), threading, and everything to know about how to design an Objective-C class - it's all here.Complement this book with the BNR book on Objective-C Programming. Both books cover about the same stuff and fill in gaps between each other. But I like this book better since it doesn't waste time trying to reteach C programming.

I have just completed three semesters of C++ in college and needed something do during the summer break. I'm 1/4 the way through with this book and so far it has made the transition from C++ to Objective-C a breeze. This book does not cover EVERY detail of Objective-C, but it certainly covers the most important concepts. I love the fact that it has some comic relief. This makes the learning process much more fun. I would certainly recommend this to anyone who has experience with C++, Java, or any object oriented programming. I would NOT recommend getting this if you have no programming experience at all.

Most of the content is good. I would have preferred more hands on examples where they ask you to go and solve a problem on your own instead of giving you example code then just stepping through everything.The section on iOS is very out of date. From memory it refers to iOS 5 as the latest (iOS 8 has just been announced at the time of this review). Similar story with the OSX section, it's a couple of years old, which in computer terms is eons!The bulk of the book on objective-c is still relevant and it has certainly helped me with my programing skills. It was a good next step from the "Learn C on the Mac" book that I read first.I would recommend it if you're just getting started in Objective-C.

Good programming books always say what the reader's background ought to be. Chapter 1 of this book has a "Before You Start" section that's thorough and clear. I appreciated the thought the authors put into it. My background matched and I found the book to be perfect for my needs. Heed what they say. Their stuff is good, a piece at a time, but I found I could not connect the pieces. Whenever I tried to write something on my own, I'd get stuck. When I found their topic that I thought would get me unstuck, it contained too many other things that I was not ready to understand.Going through this book was a joy. The concepts are covered in a nice orderly way. When you get to new topic, you've been given what you need to understand it in what you already read. I especially liked the Memory Management chapter, both because of the way it is written and where it is placed in the ordering of chapters. I'm certain that I would have gotten it wrong in my own projects if I had not read it here. When I finished the chapter, I imagined the number of hours I could have wasted chasing memory leaks in my own code. (I'm certain I'll waste some anyway but I think I'll have an easier time finding them.)Most new topics build on the same general project. I found that to be nice approach. It lets you focus directly on the newly introduced Objective-C topic using code that's mostly familiar.Download the source code. There are a few (very few) instances where the code in the book is not quite right. I found no problems with the online code. Also, I have the Kindle version of the book and chapters 14, 15 and 16 are mis-ordered in a rather peculiar way. Finally, I am using Xcode 4.5.2. There are minor differences between it and the version used in the book but I'm an Xcode novice too and the differences caused no trouble at all.

Brynn and Mia are falsely accused, then cleared, of murdering their best friend Summer. Five years later Brynn, just out of rehab for an addiction she faked, comes back to town. Mia drowns in her mother’s hoarding as she tries to put her life back together. Together, with Owen, another innocent victim of the rush to judgment, they try to solve Summer’s murder. BROKEN THINGS, a take off from the real life Slenderman attempted murder does so many things right with wonderful complex characters and an intriguing plot. Unfortunately, Lauren Oliver’s writing lacked tension and didn’t engage me one bit. I so wanted to love BROKEN THINGS but felt no reluctance to put down the story and take breaks. I didn’t consider staying up late to finish. My heart never pulsed. Told in Then and Now alternating from Brynn’s and Mia’s points of view, I had difficult remembering the narrator and time frame.If I was rating on storytelling I’d be pressed to give two stars. The five star characters, plot and reveal brought the rating up to three, but I’m hard pressed to recommend.

I want to begin this by saying this was one of my most anticipated reads this year because I LOVED Lauren Oliver's Delirium series. Her writing is so well-developed, mature and just smart. The synopsis of Broken Things was surely intriguing, and I figured there was no way I could go wrong with this one. But I did... a little.I loved the idea of Broken Things. Three friends bonding over the love of a book sounds magical, and it reminded me so much of my own obsession with Harry Potter. But what I will say, is that I did not care about Lovelorn. This whole story could have been written without the inclusion of the Lovelorn scenes and I'd feel the same at the end. In fact, those scenes were somewhat distracting.I loved the build up of the mystery. I couldn't stop reading, but I couldn't wait for it to be over because this book is SLOW. I had to know who murdered Summer all those years ago. But once I found out who murdered Summer, the reason behind everything, and how everything ended, the book was over. That was 4oo+ pages of details and words to have an ending that was done in less than 5 pages.I will not say this book is poorly written. It isn't. I just didn't love the way it was developed so slowly with and ending that was so underwhelming.

Brynn and Mia killed their best friend Summer. Five years ago, back when they were thirteen, these three girls got together in an abandoned shack in the woods to read a famous children’s book. They loved the story and its sinister voice so much that they developed a fantasy world around it. (They even named the woods Lovelorn, after the book.) They also wrote a fanfic version of it, one that revealed their darkest thoughts and desires. And then it happened: they killed Summer.Except they didn’t kill Summer. Not as such.Their lives are never the same. Brynn ends up in a rehab facility, where she hopes to never leave. And Mia has to deal with her hoarder of a mother, living one day at a time. But now that Brynn is out of the hospital, they revisit Lovelorn and all the things they thought they’d left behind, and that’s when they discover that things are far more disquieting than they thought. There was a fourth person, and it wasn’t Owen, the guy accused and acquitted for Summer’s death.I love the atmospheric feel of the book — the sense of perpetual menace in the language, especially when they’re in the woods. I write this kind of fiction, and I take pleasure in focusing on those descriptions. I think this novel is loosely based on a real-life crime, but I don’t know which one. What I do know is that this novel will resonate to those who loved PRETTY LITTLE LIARS (the TV show, not the books). It’ll also resonate to those who enjoyed ONE OF US IS LYING and 13 REASONS WHY. This is also a Lisa Unger mystery in YA form. Lauren Oliver is an accomplished YA author, and her beautiful writing pops out of the pages. (I love the DELIRIUM books.) I do, however, wish she had gone in a different direction with this novel. There are so many amazing suspense books by up and coming writers out there, that we don’t need established authors to jump into this kind of bandwagon. Having said that, I still enjoyed BROKEN THINGS and I give it four of five cinnamon-flavored cappuccinos with extra foam.

Twisting between make-believe and reality, the story spins seemingly in circles until the truth stands out clearly. Interesting, intense and emotionally jarring, Broken Things is a 5 star must read!

Lauren Oliver is really talented. She’s written several great books and this is one of them. Maybe bc my own life has made me suspicious of things when they seem just right and perfect and their lives especially Summers are very relatable sadly. I didn’t know The Who but I knew the why. She did a great job of keeping you guessing and I wondered for a good long while if we would never know for sure and she’d end it like Lovelorn. Maybe she did and maybe she didn’t and maybe it’s a bit of both.

I was uber excited for this book, I’m a thriller fiend. With that being said, this book started off pretty strong like all books usually do, but I do feel like the ending was a bit rushed and justice wasn’t really served. In the end, (spoiler) it totally reminded me of the slender man killings that happened a while back. All in all, I was a fan of the writing style, it wasn’t confusing for me (it’s literally titled THEN and NOW how is it hard to read?) 3/5 stars. Could’ve been so much better and epic. This was my first read by Lauren Oliver, I will pick up Panic next.

My wife found a copy of this book at the wonderful used bookstore, McKay's Books in Chattanooga. She said that I was sure to love it. In looking at he cover, I thought to myself...this is a 'chick book,' not one for a rough, tough guy like me! I am a 76-year old retired naval officer who spent almost 30-years in the Navy, mostly associated with submarines. Additionally, I grew up on the Alabama Gulf Coast in the 1940s & 50s. The setting and time are both evocative to me. The smells of the Gulf coast and a submarine leap off the pages, and the characters are alive in my memory. The drive south from Foley to the Gulf is still burned into my memory and this book brought it all back, vividly. At the end of that road, where one could turn to the right to Fort Morgan or left to Pensacola, there was a gas station/bait shop/burger place. One could go in either direction and see nothing else but pure white sand for as far as the eye could see. And the fishing with my father in the bayous and beaches is among my most cherished childhood memories. There is a naval signal, usually transmitted by the flags B (bravo) and Z (Zulu) which means simply 'well done.' BZ is a high compliment. So, to Mr. Andrews, I offer an 'old Sailor's' BZ! (Only one tiny, tiny observation...the submarine on the cover does not fit the period, and it is definitely not a German Type IX U-boat. Looks like a US submarine of the 1960s/70s.)

WOW! If this book does not move you, you have better check your pulse. This review is based on the second reading of the book which I did all in one day - don't do that very often. That is how good the book and story are. Why hasn't someone made a movie of this book/story? While I was reading it I kept asking, is this true or fiction. It is what I call an inspirational novel but again is it a true story? I believe it is. I read it under a different title and the book left me guessing, sort of. It is the story about a German U-Boat that had an incident between crew members just off the coast of Mobile, Alabama during WWII. It left one crew member shot and struggling to just be alive as he washed up on the beaches of Alabama. The story then gets really interesting. A very easy read but hard to put down. I highly recommend it but then that is a very safe recommendation because EVERYTHING Andy Andrews writes is GREAT!

Andy Andrews has a true gift of storytelling. And what a story he tells here. I love books that reveal parts of history not commonly known. As a Southern girl, I was intrigued to learn about German submarines in the Gulf of Mexico during WWII attacking US ships. This story is the journey of one German submariner who ends up injured and living on the Gulf Coast of Alabama. It is also the story of love, friendship, and forgiveness. Nuggets of wisdom are found throughout the tale. The author's use of a personal experience before and after the historical story is quite effective. This book is full of lessons from history and life, and I highly recommend it!

I loved that this book was basically a true story and it was about a topic of history that I never knew existed. I've read lots of WW II historical novels but nothing about fighting in the Gulf of Mexico. It was a fast read, holding my attention easily.

I began reading this book,thinking it was a light story. Was I wrong! I could not put this book down. It is a story of a man who finds some old buttons, pictures, and a silver medal in a can in his backyard when he is moving a tree. His curiosity "uncovers" the fact they were German in origin and he begins to search for the owner. The story is told through the a small town on the Gulf of Mexico and the uboat activity during WWII. This is a story of being human and making choices ( history, loss, forgiveness, friendship, courage, rebirth, etc.)all with thought provoking points that make you think about things in your own life...long after you finish the book.The writing style makes you feel as though you are listening to a good friend's storyI want to read all of Mr. Andrews books.

I so enjoyed this story. I go to the Gulf Shores area every summer and never realized there were subs in the Gulf during WW II. I would love tosit down and have a cup of coffee with Andy and his wife during our next visit there. This story has given me such a broader connection with the Gulf Shores area. My yaya friends and I chose this book to read for our book club and will be discussing it next week on our beach trip in Gulf Shores. The best part to me, besides the area setting, was the forgiveness factor. Forgiveness is so liberating and was a key element to the story.Thanks for telling the story Andy!! Kudos!!

I grew up in the Gulf area where this story takes place,when I was young I remember my parents talking about the submarines in he area during the war. I have never understood why our government knew and did nothing, I also remember them talking of spies who came ashore. This is a very very good book,I could not stop reading it until it was finished. It brought back so many memories of the time and the area and of the people who lived there,and yes I remember Foley and what it was like back then. Marvelous book!

I loved this book. It has elements of love, mystery and history. It is basically a flashback to World War II on the Alabama/Florida coast. A man, a writer, finds a packet of German mementos under a rotted tree and finds out all about who left it there. What he finds out is the impact of WWII on a small town in the 40s and the people who lived there. There are many elements such as attempted murder, a cruel Nazi spy, smuggling by an American to the German navy, and the personal lives of those that lived in a small beach town during the war. There is a little surprise at the end. It was a quick read and I enjoyed reading something different with a bit of American life during the war here in the USA.
