This is one of the most interesting books I have read that discusses everything wrong with our food culture today. That said, it's also one of the most obnoxious. It's packed full of fascinating information about the way our food is grown, and it's worth the read...if you can get past the author's idealism and snobbery.Let me start off by saying that I had no idea who Dan Barber was until I picked up this book. All of my impressions of him (and his beliefs) are based on what I read in The Third Plate. The Good: (and I mean REALLY good)This book essentially examines the relationships between our food and the environment in which it is raised/grown. That sounds simple, and has been looked at before, but this book takes it to a whole new level. I don't think I've EVER read something that managed to turn my beliefs upside down quite the same way this book did. I have a fairly large organic backyard vegetable garden & keep chickens, and before this book I would have called myself an environmentalist. I would have told you I was doing things the *right* way because it's organic, it's local, it's healthy, etc. This book turns those notions upside down. Barber made me really think about how I see "my" garden, "my" chickens, and "my" yard - and start to think of really and truly integrating the things I want to grow with all the other stuff that naturally wants to live there. Barber's ideas aren't terribly original, but he presented them in a way that was completely and utterly fascinating - and certainly made ME re-think my place and my role in growing my own food. The other thing I loved about this book was that Barber covers the same familiar ground as others - the evils of monoculture crops, the dangers of pesticides, fishing species to extinction, etc. - but he does it in a way that is fresh and interesting. He weaves his research throughout the narrative, and the result is short bursts of information that hit you hard and make you stop & think, but then he moves on before you get bogged down. In reading this book I felt like I was learning a lot, but I never felt like I was reading a textbook. To compare - I liked Omnivore's Dilemma as much as the next person, but I can't deny that my eyes would glaze over if I read too much at once. Barber's book is the complete opposite - lots of personal stories, reflections, and anecdotes are woven WITH the research in a way that is highly readable. No caffeine required. The Bad: (and it's unfortunately REALLY bad)Barber believes that in order for change to occur in this country it has to start at the top. The top being elite chefs, like himself. He describes himself as the "conductor" of a large "symphony," and he uses that analogy frequently throughout the book. From what I gather from this book, Barber essentially works in the food equivalent of an ivory tower. His restaurant is funded by the Rockefellers, and he is surrounded by his own personal organic farm, where he can grow anything he wants. He then takes that "superior" food and charges exorbitant amounts of money for the wealthy folks who can afford to eat at his restaurant. His book is dripping with elitism, and most of the time I felt like he was so out of touch with reality it was laughable.Barber contrasts the monoculture crops in America (and all their evils) with what he thinks are better examples of the way food *should* be grown. He visits farms and interviews the farmers who are changing the way we think about farming in general (which is good). Unfortunately his "examples" were of things like fois gras and jamón ibérico - some of the most expensive products on the planet. It's VERY hard to appreciate the science behind what Barber is trying to say when he backs it up with $700 goose liver examples. His ideas would have been a LOT more meaningful if he had found examples of people growing tomatoes and potatoes according to his idealistic vision of how farming *should* be. Instead, the only successful examples he seems to have found were of people who made it work because their way of farming is essentially supported by the wealthy. While I can appreciate those farmers and what they are trying to do, I was extremely put off by the rampant elitism and snobbery.I also couldn't stomach the 'top down' approach that Barber takes - mainly that change won't ever happen until the best chefs in the world take it upon themselves to start a revolution on behalf of the rest of us. Although I could appreciate Barber's perspective, it was still obnoxious. I also happen to think he has it completely backwards. He's preaching to the wealthy few who can eat at his restaurant, thinking "his" views will naturally trickle down. The won't, simply because the "rest" of us (myself included) are concerned with putting affordable food on the table every week of the year. Most people have no idea that the tomatoes they buy at Walmart don't taste anything like real tomatoes. They don't know because "real" tomatoes don't have any place in their lives - not in the stores or the restaurants they eat at - much less that there are thousands of different TYPES of actual tomatoes. I had no idea until I grew a tomato plant, and I only did that because initially I was looking for ways to save money and still eat healthy foods. I wasn't on a quest for "elite" tomatoes, and it was only by accident that I discovered how MUCH better homegrown food tastes.REAL change has to start with the millions of people that Barber ignores - the regular, everyday middle class & poor. Those are the folks shelling out the money to support our food industry, one box of macaroni & cheese at a time. Until those dollars band together and begin supporting more sustainable agriculture, change won't happen. And until that sustainable agriculture becomes affordable, people will still buy those boxes of mac & cheese. What Barber serves or doesn't serve in his restaurant has virtually nothing to do with that cycle.Barber lives in his ivory tower and preaches about how things *should* be, while the rest of us are worrying about making ends meet. So on the one hand I appreciated Barber's research and agreed with his connections between "the land" and good food, but on the other hand it was a little offensive to wade through 400+ pages of an elitist chef go on & on about perfecting ingredients most people have never even heard of. He may have interesting things to say, but he is SO far out of touch with reality that it all just comes across as idealistic nonsense.Overall: solid 3 starsDefinitely worth the read, especially if you keep your own garden or backyard animals. It will make you think about the complex relationships between the soil, the plants, and the animals, and probably in a way you haven't considered before. It certainly did for me. But that 5-star research was seriously undermined by the 'Lord of the Manor' perspective, which was sometimes a little too tedious and obnoxious to stomach.

Most "go out and eat well, save the environment and somehow still be nice to everyone you meet" books suffer from the fatal problem of not offering a realistic path both to feed 7 billion people while not also destroying the planet. it is the dirty little secret of most environmental initiatives that they would price most people out of living even basic human lives. Basically, food costs too little to be produced sustainably. This is a conundrum that for the most part is just ignored. Not by Dan Barber though. The thoughts in this book may well be the answer. That is a remarkably bold statement. The answer isn't quite what one would expect and I hate reviews that make it unnecessary to actually read the book. So get this and reflect on it. There is the added advantage of the fact that he writes well. And tells an engaging story. The only thing I would suggest for Dan is to go out and open a restaurant priced for almost everyone else on earth, and that does exactly what has to be done. Prove to us that he can do what he says without having to pay $250 a meal. I live a few miles away from Blue Hill and I would be glad to stop by for dinner at such a place. Step it up Dan. The planet depends on it.If that sounds incompatible with my review, then just buy it and see. if you care about food, the Earth and how to stop raising steaks on feedlots but feed us all, then read this.

This book is about food, farming and ecology. I'm a plantsman training to be a farmer and I loved The Third Plate. I found Dan Barbers writing to be compelling, and this book to be highly informative. This book came highly recommended by a friend who is a fellow plantsman. I picked it up and took his advice to read it with a pen. I underlined this book to death. I was thrilled to see that the first section was titled Soil, because I'm a nerd. I was so relieved to find that Dan Barber isn't afraid to treat the subject of soil as a science. I've grown tired of writers changing it from a subject that is a science to one that is just kinda...sciencey. I don't think he gets so heavy with it that it will bore or escape less nerdy folk.If you're waiting for Dan Barber to offer some wisdom as to how we bring healthful and sustainable food to poor people, or even still, the bulk of the middle class, don't. I see a lot of merit in what he has to say about the responsibility of chef's to make ecologically informed choices when developing their menus, but I don't buy into the notion of trickle down food culture. As a not-wealthy-but-well-intentioned-eater, I focused more on the notion of reshaping our meals. This can be implemented by all, not just the wealthy. No matter what the source of your meat is, there is no version of eating a breast of chicken or a 7 oz steak nightly that is sustainable.Oh, and just because everyone else is comparing it to Omnivore's Dilemma, I'll just say that I enjoyed Third Plate much more, and I found it to be much more useful in its discussion of food choices as well as farming. Dear Michael Pollan, please stop anthropomorphizing plants and soil organisms. We have science now. We don't need fairytales to explain what is actually just a combination of evolution, genetics, and plant cultivation.

Wonderful book! It really changed my outlook on food. Dan is very candid and humble, I completely disagree with the reviewers who felt him elitist. Several times on the book he comes clean on things he did wrong and was very open about his impressions and mindset even if it wasn't flattering to hear. That is the mark of great character and intellect. Some of the folks criticized him for being disconnected from average ordinary folks and being too elitist. Maybe they didn't get far enough to read the chapter on the moonshine producers farm. This is a wonderful book and Dan is honest and clear headed, not at all a snob! He is wrong about global warming, but so are a lot of people and that's not his primary concern.

Books on transferware (blue and white) pottery are very hard to find. And it's even harder to find a good one, that has enough information to be useful. This is a VERY nice reference book for transferware pottery. While not every pattern is pictured (an impossible feat considering how many different patterns there are), there are dozens and dozens of example pictures through out. Beautiful patterns - some of which I had never seen before. They also show numerous examples of the original painting or sketch or engraving next to the transferware pattern, which I found very interesting. Many makers/manufacturers marks and date stamps are covered also. This book doesn't even attempt to assign monetary prices to the patterns, but as a reference book you can't beat it. Well worth the money!

Fantastic

I wanted a book about flow blue porcelain

Very informative, but the vast majority of the photos are black and white! Not ideal. I would not have purchased the book had this been made known.

With over four hundred pages including at least one item illustrated per page plus forty items in colour this was a long awaited reference work for blue and white not encompassed by works on the major potters. And best of all, only half a page devoted to the willow pattern.Only a collector will value the true worth of this book. A british scene is a difficult item to narrow down as to the manufacturer but the variations here help immensley. British views, british scenery, dioramas are just a few of the series with examples shown, and with the help of border designs the series and manufacturer can be narrowed down if not identified absolutely. There are few dates given for the pieces but as most manufacturers used designs for as long as the design was fashionable or even the entire life of the nanufactory this is a lesser point. And lack of all-colour illustrations is irrelevant in a book on blue and white. As a collector of blue and white this is one of the most used and most useful in my collection; I have ten other books on the subject I would prefer to lose before this.

I bought this book without knowing anything about it, just being sure that if it was half as good as the previous work by these authors it would be worth having. A second volume of a reference work would imply all the best stuff, all the recognizable stuff went into the first; not so. While there would have been protests "you missed out X,Y,Z etc" here would be more contributions from the likes of Friends of Blue and other enthusiasts offering supplemental knowledge and new identifications as well as pictures of items. Some of the entries here have the suffix 'new', meaning it did not appear in volume one at all, and that is nearly every page. Old attributions are reinforced or amended as well as being supplemented.A slimmer volume at two hundred and forty pages with four hundred plus items illustrated and twenty eight in colour. The authors provide references to items from all the major sources as well as references to volume one. This book can stand alone but is best thought of as the second part of the Dictionary.

This is the second of two volumes by Coysh and Henrywood, and both are invaluable. The amount of information about blue-and-white transferware is unparalleled, and the illustrations are both copious and of excellent quality. As to the illustrations, they are mostly black and white. As long-time collectors, we did not find this particularly inconvenient. One knows the output is blue and white; and, as for the specific shade of blue and white, this varies so from not only pattern to pattern, but also from piece to piece within patterns, that it would be difficult as an editor to choose the correct variant. We have several hundred pieces of blue and every book of reference and periodical on the topic, old and new, and we have found this authority to be more useful than anything else for both learning and cataloguing.

Been There, Should've Done That: tips for making the most of college

About the Author

Suzette Tyler is a former academic adviser at Michigan State University where she counseled students during their critical freshmen and sophomore years as they were adjusting to the academic and social demands of college. Through her countless conversations with these students, and often during the heartfelt self-revelations of probation conferences, it became clear that some of the best advice ever comes from the students themselves. With that, Ms. Tyler began interviewing students from colleges throughout the country, as well as talking with instructors, professors and admissions officers from a variety of institutions. Based on these interviews, Mrs. Tyler produced "Been There, Should'ver Done That - 995 tips for making the most of college" which provides collegians with solid advice for college success in an engaging, non-textbook format. She also collaborated with Cheryl Rilly and Valerie Pierce in editing the book, Countdown to College: 21 'To Do' Lists for High School.

Rather than a graduation card, I like to give this to kids heading to college. It's an easy read with great tips from students who have 'been there' and did it...or didn't do it.

Great gift for new grads -- excellent advise -- it's my go-to gift for high school graduates going on to college.

A gift to my niece, a high school senior

MY GRANDSON AND HIS PARENTS FOUND IT USEFUL.

I'm a faculty member at a large state university -- 26,000 kids -- and I was looking around for a book that would give my son good advice about what to expect during his Freshman year. I'm glad I happened on Suzette Tyler's "Been There, Should've Done That" as it "tells it like it is"! (smile) Excellent, practical advice -- a book that the reader will want to pick up and browse over and again. This modest, casual little paperback will make a perfect high school graduation gift for that special person in your life headed off to college as -- while they think they know what to expect -- they really don't, and this book will at least give them a "head's-up." (smile)Here's a sampling:Roommate Roulette"I was really pretty shy, so rooming with a friend gave me the confidence to meet more people and try more things." (St. Mary's College)"My best friend latched onto a guy the first week of school. I might as well have roomed alone!" (Michigan State University)"Go for it. If it works out, you've made a friend for life. If it doesn't, it's only temporary. Nothing ventured, nothing gained." (University of Colorado)"Your best friend may be a slob, but it never bothers you -- until you have to live with it." (Ohio University)Great layout, large, varied print makes the book visually interesting and the advice is from students all over the country from a wide variety of colleges and universities.Buy it ! This one's a keeper, full of good, practical advice !R. Neil ScottMiddle Tennessee State University

As one reviewer already noted, the message regarding the WOW factor is simple, but too often overlooked. Anyone in sales or product development should ask themselves what their WOW factor is. Answer that question and you'll increase your market share, as Adams did.Beyond the business case, the book was a fun and interesting read. I'm a little biased, as I was an early adopter of the Tight Lies club, so I immediately knew what Adams was referring to when I saw the title of the book.

If you love golf you will love this book. And if you are an entrepreneur this is a must reed

Always nice to read about the golfindustry. Not just instruction or history is interesting so a nice read for all those who are interested in stuff like this.

Outstanding writing on what is involved in starting any business, as well as a treasure of information for the golfer. A copy should be in every college business school library.

The recipent hasn't read the book yet, so I don't know if it is to his liking. It shipped well

Thanks

"The WOW Factor" is a well-designed business book that tells the story of how Barney Adams, the creator of the Tight Lies fairway wood and the founder of Adams Golf, turned a career of missteps and disappointment into a stunning success.I call it "well-designed" because it's not too long, not too serious, not too heavy and remarkably, if discreetly, candid.Adams ties his experiences, starting with his unremarkable years as a manager for Corning and ending with the realization that his executive leadership was not what his own company needed to be able to prosper, together with his WOW factor theory. Simply stated, he says hard work and a good product is not enough to crack into an established industry. The essential ingredients, he maintains, are the ability for your product to cause consumers to say, "WOW!" and the marketing technique to get that product into consumers' hands. While this may not be earth-shaking, he does offer it as caution to all those would-be entrepreneurs who believe they can make it in the fickle, trendy but inbred golf business. It's refreshing to hear a successful executive recount how he helped run a small company into the ground by taking too high-altitude a view of its operations. And it's intriguing to read how he desperately searched for a way to get golfers to try his innovative Tight Lies fairway woods. For business purposes, what the book lacks is analytical detail. Adams can tell you what, in hindsight, he did wrong and what turned out to be right. He really can't tell you why, except as a matter of empirical result. For insight purposes, Adams reveals little about his personal life, except for his obvious passion for his work. While the development of his golf businesses apparently cost him a great deal in his personal and family relationships, he touches on that issue only a bit.Still, it's a remarkably pleasant, quick read. Adams may be a seat-of-the-pants contrast to the standard modern MBA, but he seems right on target in the fashioning the kind of book that golf fanatics would enjoy.

Barney Adams' determination and personal sacrifice is clearly articulated in the book. Following a complete accounting of how Adams Golf finds itself and reaches stability the book fails to take the next step in the life-cycle approach to strategic management with a discussion of how Adams has and will continue to re-event itself to prevent decline and future failure. Part Two "Inside the Golf Equipment Industry" was not very "inside".

Before, "Breaking Bad", "The Walking Dead", and "Better Call Saul", AMC defined its original cable programming with "Mad Men". Matt Zoller Seitz thoughtfully weaves summaries of all seven seasons and 92 episodes and intertwines them with this insightful, discerning and loving perspective. Never before have I read a more comprehensive overview of a show that I loved (and shamelessly mourn). "Mad Men Carousel" satiated my own weekly analyses and curiosities of the themes and motifs Mad Men, the show. The book has spurred in me, a new eagerness to binge watch the show, keeping "Carousel" close by as I glimpse from a fresh eye. My newly purchased book says "This Book Is A Time Machine" and I could not agree more. (Please note that this is my second purchase of this book; my mom "borrowed" my first book and never gave it back!)

Not just a 'Remember When' collection of articles. I read a lot of recaps and reviews of my favorite tv shows. I do this for 2 reasons: 1. To relive the episode I have just seen and 2. To get another (professional?) opinion of what I just saw. Did I miss something the writers intended? A sly cultural reference perhaps? Most critics give you the former, the 'remember when' review. To paraphrase Tony Soprano, 'remember when' is the lowest form of criticism. The really good ones (like Mr. Seitz & Alan Sepinwall) give you the latter. In Mad Men Carousel Mr. Seitz gives you the latter in spades. Broken down into chapters that mirror the seasons, each chapter features a self contained discussion of each episode. The book is full of natural stopping points that make it easy to pick up/put down in a busy life, though putting it down will prove difficult. There are also copious amounts of footnotes that expound on what you are reading (the most recurring being 'The Wheel' S1E13). Other of my favorite footnotes are regarding character actors and what else they have been in. It is like when we see someone we recognize in a show and immediately our inner moviepoopshoot.com* kicks in. "Oh yeah, she was in an episode of Malcolm in the Middle."Reading this book was a great way to relive the experience of seeing the show for the first time because you were learning things about characters, development, story, and production for the first time. The book is part novelization, part analysis, and part film school textbook. The creators as well as the characters of the show are characters in the book. When I first heard of this book I had a very small idea of what it would probably be, and I was ok with that. What I got instead was a book I didn't want to put down because it allowed me to occupy space and time with these characters I care so very much about. It allowed me to get to know them better than even two viewings of the complete series had done. Unfortunately, it also meant that when I finished the book I would feel that subtle sadness and emptiness in knowing I would not be sharing any more time with them.*IMDB as seen through the eyes of Kevin Smith, writer/director/star of Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back

Warning - this book review is over 2,000 words :)Okay, um, wow. I am positively blown away by Matt Zoller Seitz’s book, Mad Men Carousel. His sentences are paragraphs, paragraphs are chapters, and chapters an entire work in density not length. I mean this in the best possible way. I never knew that when Don was stopped at the railway tracks, he was contemplating suicide. Or when Betty vomits in their recently purchased automobile it ruins the new car smell and is a form of revenge because Don has stunk up their marriage. Matt brings tons to light. He schooled me on what is really going on in a series I have watched five times. In viewing, I was enamoured with the historical accuracy and the portrayal of the ad business, specifically the pitches. My last viewing was paired with this book (like martinis and oysters). I would watch a few episodes and then read Matt’s corresponding analysis. Then I would switch the order by reading then watching. In so doing, I got an incredible amount more out of the stories, characters, and historical context. Matt is incredibly balanced. He calls the series out for missteps and mistakes especially when they appear to back off issues and subjects when they shouldn’t. He acknowledges the complaint of many that, “the series is merely a high-toned soap opera gussied up with period detail and allusions to literature, mythology, and other signifiers of respectability.”I have wondered if the team behind the show had it all plotted out or it was a balance of planning and happenstance. Matt answers that with, “what we find is a series not beholden to a strict and forbidding architecture at all but something far messier, far more beautiful, and far more real.” And, “the show regularly abandons traditional narrative form for a kind of dream logic, moving forward suddenly in time, flipping backward, seemingly digressing, ordered not by chronology but by emotional associations.” Matt makes his own logic in 92 essays covering each episode. When the show was in its heyday and was a water cooler topic, I would ask others, Why did they choose advertising? Why that profession? Could it not have been set at IBM or NBC? Perhaps, but we would not have had the same wackiness of Madison Avenue. But more importantly, it is because advertising is a delightfully appropriate avatar. It has always presented an unattainable and vacuous ideal – a perfect life brought to you by…consumerism. The show ironically postulates this unattainable. It “glamourizes the constructed image of the Eisenhower-era, Leave It to Beaver-style nuclear family by showing us beautiful people with beautiful homes and clothes and cars, as if they, too, were fantasy objects, things that other people dream of having.” At the same time, many argue that the show is not about advertising. It is simply an entertaining means to deliver the deeper content. I disagree.Matt puts it this way, “Why do we want the things we want? Is it because we really want them, or because we’ve been conditioned to believe that we should.” For millennia, marketing and advertising has clouded the line between wants and needs. And for seven seasons and ninety-two episodes every character tries to find that line for themselves even while they contribute to that cloud through their professional lives. If the show can be boiled down to one theme it is the tension between wants and needs. The show explores many topics. Much has been written on whether or not Mad Men addressed race or deceivingly skirted it. Most black characters have “narrow substance”. Maids, secretaries, elevator operators, a mugger, acon artist/robber, and a Playboy Bunny. It is if the show is playing an elaborate joke.Carla is the one exception as a black character. She is a wonderful stabilizing and normalizing force. While she is the black housekeeper, she is much more. Don’s secretary, Dawn, is a complete throw away except for the ongoing jokes about their names. I can tell you I was shocked when Pete’s father tells him that a job as an account man in advertising is not fitting for a white man.Gender too, is a constant subject. Matt points out, “a woman on Madison Avenue circa 1960 was to feel constantly scrutinized, rated, and otherwise dehumanized by men.” The cringe-worthy humiliations pile up throughout the series and do not lessen. If anything, the male characters ramp it up perhaps sensing the seventies will be different than the sixties. It also touches on homosexuality through Sal, a closeted gay man. Everyone rooted for Sal and most viewers and critics thought he would return in later seasons. Matt’s analysis of the episode where Don discovers Sal’s secret on a business trip is fantastic. Don threatens him with the insider knowledge but it is so damn subtle. This is bully-Don. Don passively lashing out because he has so many secrets.Every character is a slow burn of a reveal. We go through the series gradually learning back stories. We come to understand what motivates and scares these mad players. They all want to write their own stories or to have life on their terms but they have no idea what that means or what they want. It is a frustrating quest for unattainable control.John Hamm’s Don Draper is “outwardly square but has rebellious, even anarchistic, tendencies.” He is “a crisply attired, Brylcreemed embodiment of the Madison Avenue’s influence, (but) feels like an outsider himself.” Matt calls him, “an arrogant, oversexed rock star.” In fact, he is a professional imposter. A poster child for the fake world packaged and presented in ads. As bad as his childhood was, it does not let him off the hook.John Slattery’s Roger Sterling is a charming man-boy full of one-liners. Somewhere deep down he knows he is no David Ogilvy though he wants that acclaim. A man on permanent shore-leave. He ships off as often as Don disappears and reinvents.Betty’s “narcissism and casual cruelty towards her children” became her badge of honour. January Jones either is this person or grew into the role. She began to impress in the second season but I found the fat-suit storyline detracted and distracted. She is at her best-worst when she accompanies son Bobby on a school outing. That episode was a gruesome display of parenting.Elisabeth Moss’ Peggy was wonderful. I always enjoyed the name, Peggy Olson, as it conjures up the innocence that was once Peggy and America. Matt believes the Peggy and Don relationship is so deep, so layered that it has no precedent in television history. And then there is Pete. Oh Pete. He is a perpetual love-hate of a character. Vincent Kartheiser’s delivery of the line, “Not great Bob!” is gold.Sally is amazing both as a character and in the fantastic actress Kiernan Shipka quickly came to be. When she yells, “I am not going!” to Don who is making her return to Betty, you can feel every ounce of frustration and anger. Matt sees her, “always observing and interpreting the madness around her.” You hope Sally escapes her childhood and avoids deep dysfunction if she has her own family.I really struggle with Megan. And not only because I live in Quebec and that the supporting French-Canadian characters are experts in dysfunction. After the last viewing, I now conclude that Megan is a ditzy opportunist turned unbalanced woman-brat. Did Don really ruin her life? Yes and no. He gave her opportunity and she rose to heights her own talent and maturity could not match. Many fans wish Megan never happened. I am not in that camp as to me Megan is an appalling hypocrite. Matt makes me question Megan even more when he hints that she did some naughty things in an audition to win a part while at the same time Joan prostituted herself to gain a partnership in the business.I rooted for many of the supporting players. Freddy Rumsen is reminiscent of the main character in Yates’ story B.A.R. Man. Both reel from PTSD from World War Two. How many of the greatest generation turned to drink due to experiences at The Battle of the Bulge or Okinawa? Freddy could be a book end representing the old and new but instead he is a befuddled, out-of-touch veteran who never came to grips with killing.Ken and his secret quest as a writer was fun to follow. He is better scribbler than those writing at the agency. Even when he can escape, Ken is invariably drawn to the marketing profession. Though quite conventional by Mad Men standards, I reveled in his revenge. Many folks have had issue with characters on the show either due to their very inclusion or the skill of the actors portraying them. Glen, played by Matthew Weiner’s son, tends to top the list. His story arc with Betty is a stretch and the stilted acting make most scenes brutal. Greg who played Joan’s husband never came off. The actor squandered a great role. Lou Avery is a dud. People I knew fast-forwarded through Lou’s scenes.Matt does a great job contextualizing the client pitches, “The Lucky Strike meeting is also about how language can shape perception and self-perception, and give a person or a company permission to do as it pleases.” One of the most quoted Don Draper lines likens advertising to happiness or the perception of happiness. In the meeting, “happiness means the ability to do as you please, without worrying about other people’s expectations, opinions, rules or laws.” And here I thought it was just another client meeting. The SnoBall pitch re-affirmed the fact that the competition is often within the agency. It shows that most agencies have to do work with small, unattractive accounts. When Don pitches a campaign to Waikiki Sheraton he floats a big idea that turns out to be a vision for his own suicide. He doesn’t see it until it is mentioned in the client meeting. The look on his face is priceless. Most people talk about the Kodak Carousel and Heinz pitches, I loved Accutron. Don arms Freddy Rumsen with an amazing value proposition for this time-piece. Matt points out, “Like pretty much every advertising pitch, this one either preys on existing insecurities or creates them, subsequently offering a product that promises to make everything better.” That being said, the tagline, “It’s not a time piece. It’s a conversation piece.”, is a classic.Sprinkled liberally throughout the series are shocks. Most of Mad Men is about non-stories, just people competing in an office and struggling at home. But at intervals, like life, there is a life changing event. Adam Whitman’s suicide due to Don’s denial of him as family wins as the most shocking for me. The gentle character played brilliantly by Jay Paulsen is tragic in every sense of the word. Then there is Roger vomiting an ocean of oysters. That was so well done I thought John Slattery was a method actor. The now famous John Deere incident comes with Vietnam and World War Two connections and a nod to the JFK assassination. Ginsberg’s bloody nipple and the bayonet to Abe’s chest a la Apocalypse Now are standouts. We all felt Sally’s horror when she witnesses the fellatio of Roger. The fight between Lane and Pete was a beauty. The old-style fisticuffs were fantastic.Matt believes, “Mad Men using symbolism to complicate its stories rather than tie them up in a bow.” The symbols come to represent themes including the feeling of being trapped and escaping. We see this when characters take unnecessary vacations and business trips or find a bar. Checking out midafternoon to take in a matinee is also a favorite ploy. My father was a World War Two navy veteran who did the matinee thing and I emulated him without knowing until much later that we shared the pastime. All of the characters go AWOL all some point.Having been in the advertising industry, I know that people can be jealous and vindictive, sour, acidic, petty, judgmental, and superior. That may seem like a mass generalization but it is a topic that comes up frequently in advertising so Weiner and crew got it right. The characters are ill-equipped to be adults so act childlike exuding entitlement and dissatisfaction in equal measure. At one point Megan exclaims, “You’re all so cynical. You don’t smile, you smirk.”Secrets abound but thankfully consumption and consumerism provide distraction. Matt points out that the show is, “how capitalism, advertising, and workplaces can warp the mind and kill the spirit, making people act coldly toward the ones they love because they aren’t meeting the goals the system set for them.” Meanwhile, the characters are fascinated with “work, commerce, career advancement, profit, and consumerist fantasy.” This goes beyond avoiding home life, it is how they self-actualize.I really appreciated Matt’s view of how the show is shot. He believes the character of Duck is consistently placed in sparsely furnished rooms and seen from some distance back to emphasize “his emotional and physical isolation.” Matt really digs at this, “the series tends to editorialize with camera angles and cuts rather than in dialogue.” He sees this as an invitation “to not just watch the show but scrutinize it, as one might scrutinize opponents in a fight. We’re always on the lookout for deceptions and self-deceptions.”Music underpins each episode’s theme or accentuates the actions of characters. There is the upbeat but desperate Telstar by The Tornadoes, the plaintive cry of Tobacco Road by Nashville Teens, and the clear message in You Only Live Twice from Nancy Sinatra. In later seasons, Simon & Garfunkel’s Bleecker Street, The Beach Boys’ I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times and The Beatles incredible Tomorrow Never Knows speak of being lost in our time. All very Mad Men indeed.Mad Men is at once simple and incredibly complex perhaps best compared to Bert Cooper’s description of New York City, “a marvellous machine filled with levers and gears and springs, like a fine watch wound tight, always ticking.” Comparing the show to something else that is being compared to something else is absolutely fitting as life is metaphor and advertising is comparison.Matt concludes the book by suggesting Mad Men is not about history, it is mystery. In his book, he solves a great deal of those mysteries and has forever enriched the series for me.

One of the best parts of Mad Men extends beyond the runtime of each episode: analysis. This is a show you have to watch for all the subtleties, and no one helps you uncover those subtleties like Matt Zoller Seitz.I expected the weekly recaps in print, tangible and bound next to my remote. What I didn’t expect were footnotes for the first time viewer, and endnotes for a chronic re-watcher like myself. From the review of “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes,” I can connect threads I never saw, and strengthen the ones I caught myself. If you’re a long-time fan of the show, this is an essential companion for the next time you sit down to enter the world of Mad Men. If you’ve always been a little intimidated by the show, this is a perfect guide to clear some of the smoke in your eyes.
