Book arrived in great condition. Tragic story of the multiple things that Mariatu Kamara endured, such as witnessing horrors of War and being raped and having her hands cut off by rebels. Yet she perseveres. One of the beautiful quotes in her book she says how she doesn't have hands so that she might touch others through her heart. You will definitely need to have some tissues when you read this book or perhaps wipe your eyes on your shirt. It is hard to believe how horrible the world is and reading some of the things that happened in this book to this young women at such a very young age. She perseveres and in reading her book, and in listening to her story, hopefully we can each do our tiny part to be better and make the world better.

I was introduced to this book through the book "the End of Life Book Club." Having read "Long Way Gone" by Ishmeal Beah a few years ago, it was interesting to know that the author of this book and he had once met. This book is from the opposite experience tho both were children - he a child forced to be a rebel soldier in Sierra Leone during the 1990's and Mariatu Kamara a female child amputee survivor of these soldiers. Theirs is a country so different from mine that it is hard to imagine a life of such poverty and harsh treatment much less the constant fear of being attacked by merciless soldiers. You will find this an inspirational and eye-opening book. It made me extremely grateful for the comfortable middle-class life I have led in the United States. It is good that one of the many angels Mariatu found along her journey led her to write this account of her young life so that those of us much more fortunate can appreciate and learn from the struggles of poverty and the cruelties that the many less fortunate have faced.

I have found several autobiographies by individuals who have survived some of the worst atrocities in the world to be somewhat egotistical in that their stories border on fiction [can you remember whole conversations when you were 3 and 4 years old?]. However, Ms. Kamara's story was very realistic, without a grandiose sense of self. Her story rings of true honesty, portraying her in a most realistic way: she tells us her faults as well as her ability to survive and be insightful. It was a quick read [one night!], mostly because I found myself unable to put it down. I would have liked to understand a bit more about the Canadian family and their motives for basically abandoning her [even though it appears to have been for the best] - yet it appears that even Ms. Kamara herself is not completely sure why. What her story has done for me is to read more about Sierra Leone and its history and wars - which is what I feel any good autobiography should do - inspire the reader to find out more.

Bite of the Mango is a good book. I appreciated what appeared to be a very honest story of what happened to this victim of the civil war in Sierra Leone. I felt that she gave a three dimensional picture of herself. She was a girl who was, at times, incredibly courageous and at other times very fearful. As a reader, I felt that I was made to understand both sides of her personality. I don't think that the book's purpose was to present explanations for the cause of the civil war and the incredible amount of savagery. But, the lack of background information was, for me, a shortcoming. I read this book in combination with Ishmael Beah's memoir, A Long Way Gone, and I would recommend reading the two books together.

I read about this book in "The End Of Life Book Club". This is the story of Mariatu who had lived a life of poverty in Sierra leone. She tells us the story of her village where she tells us she had been happy. However at the age of twelve, she is raped by an older man. In this same time frame, news of rebels sweep her area, and the people would hide in the bush for days, weeks, and months. Finally, she and her family are caught, and Mariatu ends with her hands cut off by rebels after watching her village burned and people killed.In her book, written with a co- author, Mariatsu asks that we bear witness to the war, to the poverty, and to the need in Sierra Leone. She doesn't crow about her own courage, although she is extraordinarily brave. She doesn't stoop to the maudlin. She shares her own times of darkness and depression when she judges herself coming short by her own measure; although not by mine.Finally she offers us the chance to bear witness.

This book is both heartbreaking and inspiring. This young girl's story brings home the horrors of war on children and the unbreakable human spirit that survives. It also shows the importance of international and personal involvement needed to help those who suffer. Highly recommended!

I found the book hard to follow as if someone had transcribed it incorrectly in English. The book did not flow well to me and left a lot of important parts out not giving a full understanding of her experience. I loved the book A Long Way Gone and decided to read this as a follow up to hear one of the victim's stories but I had a hard time finishing this book. It just wasn't a good read.

This book was a nice, quick read. Very interesting and would recommend to anyone.

This book was on my bibliography for a Masters thesis. Elsa Tamez offers a compelling theological exegesis of the book of James. She connects James with the OT prophet Amos--which she articulates in a clear Latin American perspective. Much of popular writings on NT does not consider use the prophetic status of James as an interpretative lens and Tamez beautifully illustrates the literary richness of James within the NT. From her Latin American liberation theology perspective, I found her critiques on capitalism-based economies unique and much needed from the plethora of Euro-American critiques. She offers her critiques from the location of the Methodist Church and offers United States Christians deep theological reflection on underlying assumptions of our culture.The great clarity Tamez uses speaks to both the trained clergy/theologian and the layperson theologian. In the back of the book, she inserted discussion guides that are useful for small group meetings. I recommend this book to anyone who is studying the book of James and/or desires deep Christian reflection on our economic system.

Tamez captures the holistic gospel that James is defending while other resources claim he has no reference to the gospel. This is an essential resource for a book that is written by and about those in the margins.

This treatment of James presenta a very appealing approach to the teachings of James. Easy to read, but still presents a comprehensive view

I was disappointed that the book appeared to be written for only a select group of people. I used this book for a bible study and it was not received extremely well. In my opinion, it is meant to be studied by persons who have a particular interest in working with or identifying with the marginalized populations or women in particular. I also noticed in the study guide section that the book in the past was formulated to be used by the United Methodist Church Women's Ministry. This didn't go too well with my group. Some persons in my group, although marginalized didn't seem too open to liberation theology and actually appeared hostile to some degree. It wasn't a pleasant experience for me, however, she made some really good points with regards to the foundation of the Letter of James that I used from a different perspective!

The Scandalous Message of James is a great commentary by a liberation biblical scholar in Costa Rica. It is very insightful and is aware of the prevailing scholarship.

It is hard to imagine another book being published about the Wilcox Tragedy on Denali, which happened 47 years ago. Four books have already been written about the disaster to date--the last came out in 2012--and was penned by me.My brother Bill Babcock, was the leader of what would become the rescue team. He had invited me along for the ride the previous fall of '66. I was then living on the East coast and attending college in Maine. The Mountaineering Club of Alaska had asked Bill to lead an expedition (the 53rd), which by chance trailed a week behind the Wilcox team. Both teams used the standard Muldrow Glacier / Karstens Ridge approach on the North side of Mount McKinley. When the worst storm in Denali's history exploded on top, our team was positioned to assist the five survivors, and to search the upper slopes and hopefully find the 7 missing climbers. At 19, I was not only the youngest and least experienced member of our group. I was also terrified by what lay ahead for our group.Andy Hall, whose father was Park Superintendent at the time has given us another version of this sad story, which he calls 'Denali's Howl.' Andy was five and living with his family in the park when the event took place in the summer of 1967. George Hall was Andy's father.Andy's book offers readers a carefully researched and thoroughly engrossing account of one of North American mountaineering's most controversial and heart-rendering stories. HIs narrative offers many varied and personal accounts of what happened, and he paints a vivid picture of each of the men on the 12-man Wilcox team. As I read Andy's descriptions I found myself changing some of my impressions of the climbers I met so many years ago.I also found Andy's description of Blaine Smith's 1997 ordeal on the upper slopes above Denali Pass enthralling--and very similar to what happened to my eight-person team on the South side of the mountain in 1977. Unless you have been caught out in the open during a frigid high altitude mountain storm, with winds of hurricane force, it is difficult to appreciate the thin line that truly exists between life and death. Andy describes this sheer terror with all the skill of a gifted writer. This book was recently the subject of an Anchorage Daily News article, which also provided a short excerpt. I downloaded a sample on my Kindle and was immediately mesmerized by the tragic story of twelve young men climbing Denali. The story is forceful and weighty, and other reviews describe its content well; I want to address the author's talent in his presentation of of being in the worst place at the worst time. Mr. Hall's unflinching account of Joe Wilcox's group of climbers was graphic, but never gratuitous, in its description. At the beginning of the expedition, I could almost SEE the testosterone leaking out the car windows and spilling into every discussion the group had. Despite this, there was so much compassion in the telling that I put aside any criticisms of the climbers' egos and questionable (at times) choices and just cared about the guys. Mr. Hall obviously curtailed any judgmental thoughts when he waswriting this, so I felt compelled to do the same, which made the story even more haunting. This is a tricky thing for an author toaccomplish, and Hall really nailed it. His descriptions of his father's part in the story showed a man who was obviously meant to do the job he was given. The storm, especially the wind, was a character in itself, totally indifferent to damage and death, just carrying on the way it has done for millions of years. I loved this book and enjoyed the writing of this talented author. Each person was shown warts and all the way we all are as humans. I highly recommend "Denali's Howl", regardless of what genre the reader usually reads. Somehow, this book transcends genre, and I think that it will appeal to almost any reader. Money and time very well-spent. Thank you, Mr. Hall.

For those that don't know, in the summer of 1967, a 12 man team attempted to climb Denali (Mt. McKinley), the tallest mountain in North America....only 5 came back. I'm astonished that more people don't know (or aren't aware) of this story. I know that when it comes to mountaineering disasters, most eyes turn to Everest, K2, and the rest of the Himalayas and many of the classic books written covering those related tales (Into Thin Air, The Savage Mountain, Annapurna, etc), but I'm hoping that more readers will come to know of this tragic story (it as afterall to this day, the deadliest mountaneering disaster in American history) through Andy Hall's newly written book covering this story.There's been 4 other books written on this tradegy (two from actual survivors) and it was hard to imagine any more new details emerging, but the author went to great lengths to recover and unearth old documents, recordings, interviews, etc and it definitely shows, most notably the details surrounding the "super-storm" that attacked the mountain that summer. Few details were ever evident in previous books (from the scientific side), and it was mind boggling to finally read and absorb the actual detailed conditions the climbers were faced with high up near the summit.It was also great to read some opinions and thoughts from other notable mountaineers and climbing guides on the subject, each giving their own insight to the mistakes, and problems the 12 man team faced while ascending the mountain, and relating it to their own experiences (some on the same mountain). Also want to point out that another plus to this new book was the inclusion of color photographs from the expedition from Howard Snyder's personal collection (in previous books, we were left to grainy black and white photos).At the end of the day, many questions will remain unanswered and some mysteries forever left unsolved about this climb, but thanks to Andy's incredible research, a thoughtful portrait of each climber, and their ascent up one of the largest mountains in the world has been painted, and I can't help but just admire and respect each and every one of them. They weren't showboats, they weren't world famous mountaineers; they were just young humbled college-aged kids who, while America was at war and in the midst of some type of revolution, just wanted to climb, and sadly due to some mistakes, and some horrendous bad luck, found themselves in the history books for the wrong reasons.It's hardly ever the details and descriptions of the vast mountains, or wild weather, or the "epicness" of the adventure that draw me to these stories, but moreso the people involved, and their story and their will to face something that is obviously much grander, vast, and much more powerful than they are. It's the elements of challenging, fighting, and enduring these conditions (sometimes winning, sometimes losing) that make it difficult for me to put these books down, Denali's Howl included.Whether you're familiar with this story or not, whether you enjoy mountaineering books or not, if you're looking for a true tale of fight and survival, triumph and tragedy, then I highly recommend you pick this up and experience the deadliest mountaineering disaster in American history.

I couldn't wait to download this book after seeing Scott on TV. The problem is it doesn't give any real tips or instructions on actually applying makeup. It mostly name drops about the stars and looks he has created. Not helpful for creating your own look.

Ok if you are looking for a "how to apply makeup" Makeup book you will not get it from this book at all, so I would not recommend this book for a beginner but I will say that this book has more of a coffee table book appeal. The celebrity makeup transformations in this book are cool especially the Vanessa Williams one. Overall though I feel the book is ok.

The photographs are amazing, Scott transforms people through makeup, however, you will not get step by step instructions on how to create the makeup looks featured in book. He does emphasize on the importance of taking care of your skin, for example, getting enough sleep, drinking water and basically being healthy. I love how he writes about how he took a personal journey by leaving New York and found a great place that he enjoys living in. Overall, a nice makeup book to add to my mini collection.

Not really anything new. If your looking for a tutorial book or something that is more inspiring, look to Kevyn Auccoin.

I love scott barnes, he's a makeup whiz but this book was more of a look book than an instructional book. I was bummed out.

If you are expecting a makeup artist showing you how to hight and sculpt , you will be disappointed. Before and after pictures only. Was looking forward and now very disappointed. Go to You Tube!!

I'm going to do my best to be as fair as possible.First of all, this book does not break down a whole lot. It's a lot of "what inspired me to do this look on so-and-so was...." followed by a (in my opion) vague description of what was done. I was hoping for more of an in depth break down. You won't get that here. You will get a rough description of how he gets a look, then there is a whole lotta smoke from various celebs on why Scott is such a great artist, or smoke from him on why celebX is so great. Obviously, I bought the book because I know he's amazing at what he does, I didn't need to pay to hear that from Kim Kardashian... Secondly, most of the pictures are NOT overly up close so it's going to be difficult even for the people out there who can eye-ball and then recreate a look (unless you already have a TON of experience, or you were smart enough not to order this on Kindle lol). I honestly learned more from watching the few of the youtube videos he has out there.That all being said, it probably wasn't the best book to order for kindle fire (my bad). Also, the makeup books I DO have are by Nars and Kevyn Aucoin, which are more "how-to." Perhaps I ordered this book assuming too much?Lastly, the book IS priced well +, it IS by an amazing artist +, it is a great easy reading book +. Just because I didn't learn anything I didn't know already, doesn't mean others won't. I have to admit his transformations are always impressive, and by the end of the book I couldn't help but to respect the relationship he has developed with his clients. This book didn't give me what I hoped for, but all in all, I'm still a big Scott Barnes fan. I gave the book a 4 because I feel like a large part of my disappointment came from My assuming too much.

Scott Barnes is a makeup wizard and I love learning and seeing his techniques. 10/10 would recommend.

If you have never used elements this book may help.I found the chapter 2 Taking Pictures a waste of space. No mention of settings for raw or fine jpeg as important.In fact no mention of raw at all anywhere in the book. The Taking Pictures chapter should be replaced with details related to opening edits in raw as in previous element books like Kelby's.I am keeping the book mainly because I am too lazy to go thru returning it.

I had an older version of Photoshop and hadn't used it for several years, this book helped to bring me up to speed quickly. It is much better than the help in Photo Shop elements.

I began using Elements 5 decades ago and relied on the "Missing Manual" series books to introduce me to the newer editions. In lieu of 'the missing manual' for Elements 19, I purchased this book. It introduces Elements in a simplified form with lots of screen images and explanations. Approximately 40 pages are devoted to photography. What I miss are any in depth user tips, aka the missing manual. For those who purchased the program, there is a Photoshop Elements Reference book that can be downloaded from the website. But, at this moment, Elements 2019 for Dummies seems the best guide available, in book form.

There is a minimal amount of useful info in this book. DO NOT buy this book if you are looking for info on using this software to process RAW images. They openly say the info is not in here.

I was hoping that this would provide some assistance with with making a photo book. However, it doesn’t for this feature and many others.

I just recently retired after teaching Photoshop for years. The program has so many options that’s it’s perfect for professionals. I wanted a more cost effective program that has what I need for family photos. Photoshop Elements is the program for home use.I needed a book that would help me see the differences between the two programs. I also needed to see where they put all the options and windows I need. This book is an overview of the program. Plus, it gives you a few chapters that guide you through the steps for some nice effects.It even includes a chapter on photography tips and how to use the fill flash. It does not go into detail of the RAW camera files. This was not a deal breaker for me because I usually only want photos from family events and vacations.Pretty good order and great step-by-step guides. Best used for beginning users of Photoshop.

I am an experienced photographer have used Adobe Photoshop 5 & 6 and Lightroom but I no longer want to buy these products because they are no longer available in standalone. I bought the book to thoroughly inform me of all the details of my recently purchased Photoshop Elements 2019. This book covers so very much. It's wonderful for someone new to photo editing but also it's a great refresher course for a seasoned photographer. I highly recommend it.

I am planning a trip to Madagascar and found this book a very helpful review of the various parks in the country. The photos are excellent and the discussion of the various mammals are readable but provide enough information to be interesting. This is not a technical book on either mammals or ecosystems, but is a good review of both. Perhaps I was looking for too much from this book, but I would have liked more maps and a bit more guidance on how to combine trips to different ecosystems in one trip. I combine it with the Lonely Planet and can cobble together the information, but it requires quite a bit of work. I also liked the sections on reptiles and insects - many books neglect the little creatures, which can be far more interesting than mammals in some ecosystems. Overall highly recommended.

I toured Madagascar for five weeks this spring. Near the end of my journey, my personal guide begged me to sell him this book, because it was comprehensive and difficult to find in his home country. When I came home, I immediately bought another one to use as a reference for IDing my photos. While in this amazing country, I also noticed that another local guide had the same book, so this is a testament to this book's value.

Ms. Bradt has the inate ability to take you into the Madagascar bush as she describes the unique wildlife on purportedly the world's oldest island. Having been to the African bush three times in the last five years, she has convinced us that we must not miss the unusualo wildlife, mammals, lizards and birds in this rarely visited island. God willing, it will be our 2012 destination. Thank you Ms. Bradt for your phenomenal book!

Took this book along with me to Madagascar & was very glad I did. I was able to identify many lemur species I came upon throughout the country from the beautiful, close-up photographs in this book. The descriptive of each species is written in layman's terminology along with scientific names for the more biologically erudite. This really is a terrific book.
