The author lays out a foundation and process to prepare to attend the Temple for the first time. The author also gives wonderful homework for readers to do that invites reflection and prayer. The book is readable but doesn’t sacrifice intellectual depth.

I really enjoyed this book. I am preparing to enter the temple, and I found this to be a helpful guide. It was well written and easy to understand.

This is a book that I wish I would've had years ago. I love how each chapter is broken down in a way that makes the topics relatable, as well as easy to visual and understand. My mind was opened to a few new concepts that I hadn't considered before, and I have the desire to learn more for myself through personal experience.Each chapter takes a topic at a time. There's a "homework" section at the end of each chapter that gives the reader some additional, personal ideas for study and contemplation to make this experience right for each person. This book just is not doing it for me. A lot of the places it says things should be, are not there on my InDesign cloud interface, and the layout of the book is more of a reference guide than a book, but since many of the reference guides are wrong, I would prefer a different book. I am having to use this in a class, but I do not think I will buy more of this series again and instead will purchase the actual ADOBE classroom books instead. I have used them in the past and they seem to be more thorough and correct.

At this point I own a Vistual Quick Start Guide for all of my major programs. I like how they are written and I find them very useful. In general, they look at each program in a similar way and allow me to get my work done and learn new things extra fast.

A great reference book for inDesign that I always keep at my desk.I got tired of googling how-to's for things in inDesign and purchased this book instead. The problem with googling is that the person who is answering the questions you have no clue if they even know what you are talking about. You could spend 30 minutes searching the internet or just a few minutes reading a section of this book. Clear instructions, clear pictures, all-around great book to own if you do a lot of work in inDesign.

Pretty good book, although the index isn't that great. To wit: some of the topics I needed to find were not listed under their obvious names, but under more obscure titles, or not at all.I made a mistake when I ordered the book because it is for ID CC, whereas I have ID CS6. I don't think this is a big problem, and have the sense that once you reach a certain level of comfort, you can figure out any differences between them.I haven't tried the electronic tutorials, but have no reason to doubt other reviewers who rave about them.I think it's a good buy and I don't feel I need any other book to master CS 6.

I have just started into this book, but so far I love it. I started from page 1, because I have never used InDesign before. I have seen it used, but I never used it myself. The book so far is very clearly written and it goes over every detail. What I love are the QR code videos. When you can't quite get what the author/instructor is trying to say, these little videos come in very handy. I also love that there is an electronic version of the book.

Do you learn best by doing hands-on tutorials? If so, this is NOT the book for you, because there isn't a tutorial to be had from beginning to end.Or do you like to build a foundation first by learning every possible detail about every single tool, command, function, etc etc etc? If so, this book still has too many issues. I could not, in good conscience, give it more than two stars.I wanted to do one, but the book does have reference information, so there's that.The QuickStart guides don't have the same structure as the Adobe "Classroom in a Book" series at all, and only you can decide if that's an thing that is at all workable for you or not. It does depend to some extent on your learning style. The CiB series always starts with a tutorial that provides an overall example of something you can achieve by using that particular software. The problem, of course, is that you're thrown in at the deep end. And if you don't really know anything about the software yet, you'll be going through the steps it takes to get to the final product without knowing what you're doing or why you're doing it. QS doesn't do this. There's a reason why there are no lesson files to download. You're not doing tutorials or really even looking at finished examples. You're going through each and every conceivable detail about each area of the software and exactly what it can do. There are separate chapters on setup, text color, fills, strokes, and effects, points and paths, imported graphics, and text effects before it even gets to pages and books, for example. You'll learn each little piece, and there are some anecdotes about when the author worked in print publishing, but there's no real sense of how or why it all fits together. And that's a problem.On the whole, I tend to be closer to the second type of learner,but any kind of lesson plan has got to have SOME kind of example of hands-on use of the software in order to create a final product. The user NEEDS to be able to see what this program can do and what they need to know in order to get there. I do think that it's important to know at least something about what each tool/command/window/tab group is and what it does before just jumping into tutorials. That having been said, there are also very good reasons to have tutorials and results-based lessons, and I'm not sure I've ever clearly realized this before trying to get this book. Going through every single aspect of every single detail in this program without a sense of how it all fits into a larger picture gets to be a really tedious activity. It's kind of like slogging on through an endless journey with no way to either see or visualize the endpoint.So is this book worth getting? The Adobe CiB series is better, and it's just as easy to buy. However... several people have been saying that they've run into some difficulties with downloading the lesson files that are supposed to be included with CiB, and that there is no tech support at all to help with solving the issue. So that's something to keep in mind too. There are advantages to not needing lesson files, but not enough of them to put yourself through the incredible tedium of this book. Maybe if you understand you're not going to be getting any actual tutorials or real examples of a final product created with InDesign, and you're willing to go outside the book for those things (there are certainly a lot of tuts out there), then this would be an okay book. But it doesn't really work to deliver every imaginable detail about everything with NO sense of how it all fits together.

This is a poorly organized and referenced book. It is intended as a guide to take the beginner through to competence with InDesign CC, but it lacks the clarity and continuity do much more than infuriate its user. Many functions of the program do not even appear in the index, so reference is left up to chance encounter if there is any reference at all. One example is "Presets." Presets are mentioned several times within the text but are never defined nor explained and there is no index citation for Presets. This occurs repeatedly within the book. A terribly garbled section is that on importing text from other sources. As an author I tend to use Wordperfect as my main text generator. The program is versatile enough to produce output readable editable by Word, Quark,and other programs. But the section on bringing in text doesn't even mention Wordperfect nor does it suggest methods of preserving editing from any source other than Word.It even lacks clarity on what the program is doing when it produces its own de novo formatting. It would be easy but tedious to rant on for several pages about the faults of Cohen's book that I uncovered in transferring a 400 page novel from a WordPerfect/Quark document into an InDesign one. There must be better guides!

Good info for planning a trip to Malta. It seems to be based from the perspective of a traveler from the U.K. So the tour agencies listed are based in the UK but otherwise its great even if you're from elsewhere.

I bought this as well as Lonely Planet, and I like this one better because it's meatier. It has so much more detailed information than the lonely Planet book--was really a gem on the trip!

I preordered this book a couple of months ago, fighting tears while sitting in a pool of sweat and feeling disgusting in clothes that were too tight. I was like, "I'm a nurse g-d damn it! Why don't I know about this sh*t!" And why am I talking like a sailor?! I don't talk like that! I had read some articles on the internet, and while they clued me in to some of my symptoms being menopause-related (I was one of those people wondering if I had early-onset Alzheimer's), they also were kinda negative. The message was try hormones, but basically life sucks from now on. This book is positive and straightforward; and while I realize it's got to be upbeat because it's a self-help book, it is also SO GENUINE! And thank you Dr. Allmen for mentioning your dog, because my dogs seriously are my ticket to physical and emotional health so often lately. I'm feeling really positive about facing this new challenge now!

When I hit perimenopause (or rather, it hit ME) at age 46, I thought I was going nuts. Nobody had ever told me what to expect from menopause except for hot flashes (and my older sisters cackling cryptically and saying, "Just wait"). Even my beloved gynecologist was no help -- I went to her in a panic about my cognitive problems, and her response was, "Yep!" "What can I do?" I asked. "When does this go away?" She looked at me for a long moment and then said perkily, "Oh, never! But you get used to it!" NO WAY MAN. She refused to even discuss hormone replacement because it was "too dangerous." Well, I'm not going gentle into that good night. I got on the internet and searched "menopause specialist."Dr. Allmen's practice was the first Google hit. I'm lucky enough to live in NYC, so I was able to make an appointment with her, and she asked that I read her book before coming in. BOY was it worth it! She couldn't have explained all this to me in THREE one-hour appointments. I came in armed with a lot of information and bearing very few questions, because this book really answers a lot of them. It's thorough, detailed, and funny -- but most importantly, it made me feel IN CONTROL OF MY OWN LIFE for the first time in 6 years. I went to my appointment knowing the risks and potential rewards of the various treatments, and with a pretty good idea of how I wanted to proceed, and we discussed it as equals and agreed on a plan of treatment. I don't feel like a washed-up old crone anymore.Thank you, Dr. Allmen, for helping me feel like a whole person again!

I wanted to like this book as it was recommended to me. Unfortunately I found the author’s writing style to be very self-promoting. She may be an expert, but I didn’t need to be continually reminded of it. Similarly, she constantly seemed to be “selling” or previewing upcoming chapters. That’s fine once or twice, but it seemed repetitive. I think there is some good information in the book, I just had a hard time sticking with it because of her style.

This woman SAVED me!!! If you are having ANY menopausal symptoms, this is the book for you!!!!...it will truly change everything we've been led to believe by mainstream media. I suffered for over four years with 20-30 severe hot flashes a day...to the point that at times I felt like I was going to have a breakdown (everything I did triggered them) and then I found Dr Allmen...Thank God!! If you can't get to see this wonderful, revolutionary doctor in NYC, then you need to buy this book and I am sure if you are her patient, like I am, you bought it as soon as it came out. She not only helped me with my menopausal symptoms, but she has THE BEST PREP for a colonoscopy that I have ever taken...leave it to Dr Allmen to figure out how to make that necessary but horrible prep more pleasant and I got an A+ from my GI dr (even though I did not use the one he prescribed). She also addressed the urinary symptoms we begin to face, bone health, heart health...She really is a doctor who addresses ALL of the body and not just her specialty...the world needs more doctors like her!!!!!This book is such a quick read (not a bible!) and a great reference for many of the problems we face during this difficult period of a woman's life. THANK YOU DR ALLMEN!!! You have know idea how much you have done for me and my husband ') !!

This is a Hilarious MUST Read (for the 40+ crowd!) Dr. Tara Allmen demystifies all the mid-life hormonal medical mumbo jumbo - and gives it to you strait - she fills you in on all the fun little secrets no one bothered to warn you about that hit you mid-life - but then helps you navigate thru them- so you're not feeling defeated!!!! She is AMAZING in person - and the book reads like she's right there with you - in her witty, no nonsense, cut to the chase, not gonna waste your time fashion! She gives you all the info for, as she aptly puts it "what to expect when your not expecting!!!" Admittedly I just received my copy last night and am only half way thru, but just had to post this 5 STAR review! What can an old Catholic guy and a young female Rabbi possibly have in common? A lot, as it turns out. I’ll keep this book on my reading table and return to it often. I bought a copy for my daughter, who’s not religious at all, because I know she’ll enjoy Ruttenberg’s story and appreciate her voice.If I taught a class on “How To Write Memoir,” this would be the textbook.If I taught a class on “How Be A Good Writer,” this would be on the required reading list.If I taught a class on “Worthwhile Things To Write About,” the citations in this book would be on the syllabus.Never mind that I’m not a teacher.

I was very struck by the writing in this book. Her style is easy to follow and has a wonderful flow. Her spiritual journey was truly a long and winding road and I saw my own journey in many of the passages even though we are members of different religions. She drew from wisdom from many different sources and spiritual disciplines which made this book very accessible. I would recommend this to anyone on a spiritual journey or to anyone who is questioning their beliefs.

I absolutely devoured this book. I'm someone who is converting to Judaism after a long religious search myself, so this book really spoke to me. Additionally, however, it's incredibly well-written, thought-provoking, and deep. Ruttenberg manages to seamlessly integrate philosophic and religious critique with mystical texts alongside teenage angst and adult reflections and experiences. It's a wonderful read, not only for Jewish people, but for anyone who has been on a religious journey. Mazel Tov Rabbi Ruttenberg!

I'm probably not being fair to Ms. Ruttenberg; my standard for religious autobiography is Anne Lamott. And Thomas Merton's "Seven Story Mountain".She writes a decent book but plunges through the decades with only a good glance at all that occurred. I hoped she would expand on her family, as it sounded like their dysfunction had much to do with hers. Religion is lived on two levels: the intellectual, received in seminary, and the fierce discussions about the meaning of laws. The other level is the raw, unfinished world. Watching someone die in the hospital. Following someone in the congregation for a few decades, then preaching their memorial after you've walked the whole way with them.A greater revelation of personal struggles and encounters with what Jack Kerouac called "Naked Lunch"It was an OK read and I would recommend it to others.

This book is a very good book to start you thinking about how to balance Jewish teaching with a secular life. The author went from being an atheism to an observant Jew. It was a journey with a lot of bounces. It was done for the right reasons, to meet a passion to be a better person. It is entertaining and thought provoking. I enjoy seeing some my home town Chicago area bars listed, but I enjoyed more the journey to be an observant Jew even though I myself will not meet that criteria. It helped me think about my journey along that route.

Quick read. I enjoyed it since I was able to relate to how she felt a little displaced with her social circle as she started practicing her Judaism. I only wish she would explain more about why and how she felt more spiritual as she explored her religion besides using meditation.

Danya Ruttenberg's latest book is a very moving memoir of a young woman's spiritual development. This is more than a biography, it's a guide to developing one's own spiritual path. Rabbi Ruttenberg brings stories and sources from various faith traditions which add to her gripping narrative. I truly couldn't put this book down. I highly recommend it.

This little memoir is the story of an atheist hipster who, after her mother's premature death, becomes interested in God and gradually turns into a pretty observant Conservative Jew (and, at the end of the book, applies to rabbinical school). If you share the author's enthuasiasms for moderately traditional religion and leftish politics, this could be an inspirational book.. If not, probably not so much.Here are a few lines I liked: "The only archetypes [of God] that I encountered in my upbringing and in the wider culture were of God as fascist dictator, or, maybe, God as the Big Buddy who makes everything okay.""it was extremely daunting to do such a private, precious thing [as pray] in public..[so in her first visits to synagogue] I never spoke to anyone ... I wanted - needed- to pretend that I was somehow alone at this." I could identify with this- when I first started going to synagogues I mostly wanted to be left alone. It was only after I developed a certain degree of "ritual mastery" (as she puts it) that I felt more of a need to be welcomed."[in travel] Rather that holding on to the same identity... as is easy to do amid the comforts of home - we shift and change and become new in every moment." I identified with this because I have found that I have made the most drastic religious shifts only after moving to a new city.[a rabbi] "instructed me to embrace [feelings of failure] until I got to the place where my failures merged with everybody else's failures .... The next day was Tisha'b'Av- the anniversary of the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple, a holiday about confronting suffering and disintegration." As the rabbi in question (Alan Lew) has written elsewhere, Tisha'b'Av is part of a cycle, beginning with the recognition of failure on Tisha'b'Av, moving towards repentance and reconciliation during the High Holy Days.

Beautiful LEGO is a book that fits its title to a tee. It is chock full of stunning and original art made completely from LEGO blocks.The book is done in full color on heavy paper stock and feels and looks high quality. It’s an excellent “coffee table book”. When people see the cover they will immediately want to look inside.Inside they will find hundreds of wonderful photos of LEGO sculptures that range in size from just a few bricks and a few inches high to complex life-sized sculptures containing thousands of bricks. The sculptures are very diverse and cover all sorts of subjects - from wildlife, to pop-culture characters, to architecture. Each sculpture is fascinating to look at, and to appreciate not only the overall appearance, but also the artists’ creative use of various LEGO bricks. As a child who would always follow the instructions, seeing the creative and wonderful things that people can do when they don’t, is inspiring and fun.As if the wonderful images weren’t enough there are also interviews with the artists scattered throughout the book that are very informative and enjoyable.All in all… it’s amazing what can be done with simple LEGO bricks.

This was a Christmas gift for my granddaughter, the Lego-lover. Unfortunately, she opened it first. We almost couldn't get her to put it down and open the rest of her gifts. I wrapped it after just glancing at it, expecting to look at it further after she'd opened it, but could never find a time in the next four hours when she wasn't engrossed in it.Her mother says she falls asleep at night with the book. What a smashing success this one was.Since I only had the opportunity to look at a few pages I can't comment extensively on what's in the book. You'll have to take my granddaughter's word for it..."Awesome!"

Lego in the mind of adults...fascinating. Bought this as a Christmas present for my young adult son. It was a tradition every Christmas from the time he was about 4 that he would receive one Lego kit to do on Christmas morning (a page at a time to slow down the "tearing through the presents" impulse). He still likes Legos, but as a graphic artist and cartoonist, I thought he might really enjoy seeing the creativity of others.

The pictures in this book are phenomenal and amazing! Such beautiful and mind blasting creations! I guarantee you will not want to put this book down!I want to go to my parents house and dig out my old Lego's that are in storage and build a masterpiece!

This is a well done Lego book. The creations featured are perfect examples of adult built models, as most (if not all) do not include any mini figured themed builds. It has a diverse collection of sculptural builds of everyday things, such as food, animals, and vehicles, as well as big and small architecture builds with themes ranging from realistic to pure imagination. The level of detail within the builds allows you to look over it again and again and pick up something new each time. And despite the variety of builds and inclusion of many different builders and styles, everything is cohesive and beautifully laid out. My son has been a Lego fan for roughly 40 years!! Even now he enjoys messing with them from time to time. This book enhanced his appreciation for the people who also work with Legos. The photography is phenomenal and the patience and work of the builders is nothing short of amazing. Great book to study. Several Christmas guests enjoyed looking at the creations during the holiday.

this book is well assembled with some amazing MOCs (My Own Creations). i was happy to see many of my favorite builders (and builds) included. .. and Mike Doyle's "Contact 1" blew me away. not sure how i missed that one.i recommend this to any AFOL.. great as a picture book and for inspiration
