Review

With Strong, Kara Goucher elevates the athlete memoir, providing readers with more than just compelling anecdotes, but techniques we can apply to our own lives. In doing so, she becomes our coach, our champion—someone not just to admire, but to emulate. I love, love, love this book. It's intimate yet emboldening, aspirational yet useful. Strong is the perfect training companion. Thank you, Kara, for sharing these lessons with us. (Sheila Monaghan, Editor-In-Chief, Furthermore from Equinox)Equal parts inspiration and tactical advice that you can put into place immediately, Strong is the ultimate guide to dreaming big and reaching your goals―whether that’s qualifying for the Boston Marathon or scoring the big promotion at work. I’ve admired Kara’s luminous energy, grace, grit and many running accomplishments from afar for many years. Coach and author are natural roles for her: There is no better person to encourage you to power onwards and upwards with confidence. (Liz Plosser, Editor-in-Chief Women’s Health)High-achieving women in any field can find themselves drained as they try to outrace self-doubt. Kara Goucher offers techniques and tools for sustainability over the long haul, whether it’s distance running or a different kind of professional goal. (Bonnie D. Ford, Senior Writer, ESPN.com)Kara Goucher is someone I’ve looked up to and admired for many years, not just because of her extraordinary running prowess and athleticism, but because of the difficulties she’s overcome and the grace in which she’s conducted her life. The principles Kara outlines in Strong are universal and can help anyone improve and get better, regardless of age or ability. Strong has both helped and inspired me, and I’m sure it will do the same for you. (Dean Karnazes, ultramarathoner and New York Times bestselling author)It’s easy to assume that a two-time Olympian like Kara Goucher was just born confident, but it’s reassuring to learn that it’s taken years of discipline to achieve the kind of mental strength that has led her to the highest levels of sport, as well as extraordinary success outside of competition. Through lively anecdotes, Kara gives tangible techniques that all of us can implement in our personal quests for improved confidence―in running and in our daily lives, too. Strong is inspirational, motivational, and most importantly, it’s a practical guide for stoking our self-belief. (Erin Strout, journalist and author, regular contributor to Runner’s World)Goucher isn’t just one of the most recognizable runners in America; she may be the best at cultivating a fan base. (Runner’s World)Ms. Goucher has helped ignite a recent resurgence in American women’s distance running. (The Wall Street Journal)I believe that most runners--both amateur and professional--can struggle with self-confidence. It's really interesting to learn about the power of our minds and to think how mental strength and well-being can impact performance. Kara's book has inspired me to work with my mind more often, and I will continue to come back to these words by Kara and her collaborators. This is truly an amazing book that will make you stronger not only as a runner but also as a person. (Emelie Forsberg, professional ultramarathoner and author of Sky Runner)

From the Author

“I like to keep a confidence journal. Every night after I write in my training log, I also write a sentence or two in my confidence journal about my run for that day. It might be something like, “felt great today and surprised myself by finishing my mile repeats much faster than expected.” Or it could be something like, “felt terrible today. Was way off pace but somehow found the strength to finish the workout.” It’s a way to find something positive from every single day of training. Then, the week of and night before a big race, I can look through my confidence journal and remind myself that I am ready to be on the starting line. Not only do I remind myself of all the hard workouts I nailed, but I also remind myself of all the times I fought through bad days and still found a small victory. Reviewing this journal has been super helpful in calming my nerves and gaining confidence when I go to race. It has made a huge difference in my mental preparation.” (Kara Goucher)

I bought “Strong” by Kara Goucher because we have two runners in our household of seven. I was going to put the book on the coffee table, to inspire my 11-year-old and 18-year-old grandsons to train harder. It is a beautiful book that will draw them to pick it up and browse because of the velour feel to the cover, the unusual dimensions of 6-1/2” x 7-1/2”, and the gorgeous photography. But I think I’m going to claim the book as my own and (maybe) share it with the boys on occasion. I am a musician, have been playing and performing since I was 15 (and I am now 72), but I still have an issue with self-confidence. I have never gotten over feeling nervous when I am faced with an audience expecting to hear something amazing, and because of this – I tend to avoid performance opportunities. This book contains page after page of practical tips about how to build self-confidence. Actually, I think the title should be “Confidence” instead of “Strong.” I have always been a list-maker, and make extensive lists of the goals I want to reach. Goucher applauds this, but encourages us to also create a confidence journal. Running, like performing musically, is a head game. Runners and musicians both tend to think things like, “I’m not ready for this.” “Everyone here is better than me.” “What was I thinking when I took on this race/performance.”With a confidence journal, we can change our negative self-talk to confidence boosting statements, focusing on the positive. The book provides space to begin doing this, with leading questions by Kara to get you started. I recommend this book for anyone who may lack self-confidence, whether for running or another chosen field.

I've always been a pretty positive runner, yet I've never been a super serious athlete either. I'm more of an ultrarunner who slows down so i can keep on talking to my best friend. This book really took me inside Kara's mind and her journey and helped me see how often we can struggle when surrounded by so much pressure to succeed. She's an amazing runner and is a true inspiration for me! The journal is a great accountability tool and one that I am enjoying using as I train to run the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim-to-rim. Eventually the body will tire out, yet the mind can keep me going strong thanks to this book.

Disappointed, not what I expected. Returned.* Updated, this was not the training book I was looking for, not my cup of tea. Not for me, Others may enjoy, but I returned it.

This book was not quite what I was expecting when I bought it. That’s not a criticism, just an observation. I was expecting more text, more “meat” I guess. But the work book like set up forced me (because I bought the damn thing, I’m gonna use it!) to do some self analysis I would not otherwise have been likely to do, and it did it in a friendly way. I’m still not much of a navel gazer, but I have started a journal that doesn’t just list my workouts. And though the entries aren’t quite as Kara suggests, they are about addressing my own self doubts and negative self talk in a way I think she would applaud. Bc let’s face it, that voice in your head is the only one you always hear— birth to death. It’s worth making it a bit kinder and less judgemental.

I am a runner and always looking for good books on the topic. I will note that being a good runner doesn’t always make for good authors. This book is the exception. Kara has amazing insight on what a runner needs to be successful. She has incorporated other professionals that motivate, encourage and empower. As a woman I love Kara’s honesty on her own struggles. I highly encourage this to anyone who considers themselves a runner!

Great book with tons of personal experiences and inside the personal confindencd of Kara Goucher. Activities to try!

I really like and respect Kara Goucher, but this book is a total waste of money. The print is huge, the pages have maybe a paragraph on them, and most of the pages are blank. "Think of words that motivate you and write them down on the following pages." If this were a real book there wouldn't even be enough content for 1 chapter. I was expecting so much more. You are mostly paying for blank pages.

Every runner at one point or another deals with doubts and self confidence issues. I love that this book helps us in this area. I feel every runner should read it and will learn a valuable lesson.
