This story is about a dwarf named Tungdil, raised by humans, who is sent on an elaborate journey, to reunite with his kinsmen and save the dwarven race from doom. The beginning of this book is cheesey and hard to get into. Disease and war is quickly devastating the dwarven race, and everybody is fighting with everybody for no apparent reason. There are metaphors that are intended to give a poetic visual, but don't make a lot of sense in hindsight. The character seem incapable of experiencing emotion which makes the story hard to connect to. The characters keep time in Orbits and Solar Cycles; I've determined and Orbit is like a day, and a Solar Cycle is like a year, but if an alternative time unit is going to be introduced, it should also be explained at some point. The original was written in German, and I think part of the cheese is that the translator tried to translate exactly...Not that I speak German, so I could be wrong, and it might be cheesy in both languages, but if its anything like Spanish, translations don't always need to be exact... For example, the names of the Magi...Nudin the Knowledge-Lusty... I might have gone with Nudin the Philonoist (means lover of knowledge) or Nudin the Scholar. Maira the Life-Preserver, could have been Maira the Preservationist, instead of being named after a floatation device... But again, I'm torn between the oddness of the titles and my inability to read the original text.On the upside, there were some attributes that made this story better. First the ease of flow; sometimes in epic fantasy there is a lot of storytelling, a lot of side trips down where the ancestors went when they were alive... There isn't any of that, not really, so the hardest thing you're going to have to remember is the difference between Gandobur and Gandogar. I think the adventure was decent, fast paced once Tungdil's journey started; plenty of battles and disputes between the characters, and there was a large range of personalities. I think the plot was easy to follow, the bad guys are always clear from the good guys. Everything tied up nice and neat at the end.

This book was... interesting. It's not a great book, but it's not a bad book. Unfortunately, the one place the author truly fails is names. His race names are long tread, and it really hurts the book. It's kind of sad because the result is that it *feels* like you're doing a derivative retread of LotR, even though you're not. But with Dwarves, Elves, Alfar, and Orcs and Ogres... you just can't help it. And while the Dwarves have some interesting familial affinities, they're still all anti-magic, anti-woods, anti-sun, and have an affinity for smithing. ::yawn::That said, the story isn't as derivative as it feels, there's some interesting bits and it's definitely still a fun adventure. The other biggest weakness is the use of Deus Ex Machina. Every book gets to use one or two, but this one... they sometimes seemed totally random. I.e. "Oh, you can't get the magic whatsamabob because the floom is dead! But it's ok, because there's a replacement." "Oh no, you lost the magic whatsamabob, but it's ok because it turns out you NEVER NEEDED IT."It's worse than Dorothy's Ruby Slippers. There's a couple odd plot points they gloss over too. Like how a character managed to get somewhere they shouldn't be, faster than others, with a bunch of stuff, without any of the intervening people/places knowing about them (explicitly not knowing). All in all, though, it was still fairly enjoyable. I just think the author has the skill for a better book, so it was sad this wasn't. But... it's also a debut. So...P.S. Just use "days." "Orbits" used obsessively just... draws attention to the fact that no other thing was renamed.

I started reading this book on a whim since I was on a fantasy kick, and my favorite race is the dwarves(no surprise)! When I began reading it, I had no idea I would be reading one of my all time favorite series from that point on. The book does not merely revolve around the tales of dwarves, but it incorporates the storylines of many different races and unique characters. You will follow the novel from the perspective of our heroes, villains, and all important characters ranging from a traveling band of actors, to the most powerful wizards on earth, to the kings and queens of the human kingdoms, and even to the war camps of the Orcs or the hauntingly beautiful but terrifying lands of the dark elves (Alfar). My favorite aspect of this book is that it reminds you that no hero is immortal, rather than just one major climatic death, it reminds you time and time again that no matter how amazing you are, you are only mortal. It knows how to tug on your emotions and read further to see how the heroes deal with seemingly impossible odds.I definitely loved this book and highly recommend it to others!

A good beginning to a great dwarvish saga! The first half of the book was a little uneven, but as the author tunneled more deeply into his tale, the sense of adventure grew and creative scenes and exciting battles improved. With a little "willing suspension of disbelief" the story is engaging and the characters begin to come to life. Dwarves are great creatures, and it's time they took center stage! Eagerly looking forward to the next book in the series, which I've ordered from Amazon! There is even a video game coming out soon based on this book.

Story is very contrived. Villains always happen to be at the right place and time. New heroes arrive out of no where to save the main characters. Lost my interest very quickly. There are lots of much better fantasy books out there. Don't waste your time on this series.

Jung, Buddhism, and the Incarnation of Sophia: Unpublished Writings from the Philosopher of the Soul, by Henry Corbin

Review

“That Henry Corbin was one of the great religious thinkers of the 20th century will be apparent to all who delve into this brilliant collection of his previously unpublished writings on Carl Jung and Buddhism, the gnostic Sophia, and Sufism. Corbin’s insights into the profound roots of Jung’s teachings make this essential reading for those who ponder the ties that bind psychology and spirituality and all the great religious traditions to one another.” (Jeff Zaleski, editor and publisher of Parabola magazine)“Jung, Buddhism, and the Incarnation of Sophia is where two astounding explorers of the inner cosmos, Henri Corbin and Carl Jung, meet in their insights--an intriguing octagon of mirrors surrounding the illuminated soul.” (Chris H. Hardy, Ph.D., author of The Sacred Network, DNA of the Gods)

As a long time student of Jung, Buddhism and Taoism I took a chance, thinking this might be an interesting book, although I knew nothing about French philosopher Henry Corbin (1903-1978) before reading it.Part 1; although based on the writings of Jung about Buddhism and Taoism, it doesn’t add much to the study of any of the subjects, not very insightful or deep exploration of psychology or spirituality, instead mostly a rambling and wordy rehashing of what Jung originally had said (taken from various introductions and commentaries he penned), along with a few references and conjectures based on Corbin’s own expertise in gnostic and esoteric Persian traditions. Part 1 at least ends with an interesting chapter on alchemy, using Taoism as a launching off point. And this is perhaps the essence of the problem; that Jung the pivotal subject of these essays, had a rather limited and narrow (some would say misinformed) view of Buddhism specifically, and Eastern spirituality in general, and that speculations about spirituality are rarely helpful when not based on first hand knowledge.Although Jung had a sincere interest in and appreciation of Buddhism it was for the most part informed only by books, and so relatively superficial and biased. For instance his knowledge of Tibetan Buddhism was via the infamous “translations” by Evans-Wentz, even though Evans-Wentz was no translator, Tibetan scholar, nor even a Buddhist! Instead as an editor he presented these rare and essential mystical teachings 2nd hand through the lens of a Western Theosophist steeped in Advaita Vedanta Hinduism and New Age spiritualism.(For an informed discussion of this and a critique of Jung’s subsequent view see John Myrdhin Reynolds’ lengthy essay in his translation of a related Tibetan text published as “Self Liberation through Seeing with Naked Awareness.”)Overall my impression is that after a really slow start Part 1 at least ends with an interesting essay on Taoist Alchemy, and then Part 2 on Jung's "Answer to Job" and Corbin's "Eternal Sophia" reply, continue in being similarly interesting - specifically because they address the alchemical aspects of Jung's work - ground he was much more familiar with than Eastern religions (and which I am less so).But perhaps the best thing about the book is the general appeal to modern man to rediscover the divine in our own lives – the value and wonder of the soul (in psychology) and spirit (in spirituality), experienced as our Self through myriad masks and paths in the process of individuation.“What needs to be emphasized here is the extent to which this imago animae – insofar as its encounter is a decisive stage in the process of individuation – holds, all in all, the secret of the Golden Flower…. The activation of the archetype of the imago animae is therefore a supreme event. It is the undeniable sign that the second part of life has begun” (p. 79)This may just be the projection of a Jungian, but I can relate to it at least!Otherwise I’m really not sure who the audience was intended for, but it seems perhaps aimed at a reader unfamiliar with either Jung or Eastern religions, say perhaps a freshman introductory philosophy class on comparative religion and the nature of the soul and Self in various spiritual traditions - East and West. (Is there even such a philosophy class these days? Maybe in Seminary.)One quirk of the book is it’s an incomplete manuscript (collection of essays really), which was presented to the editor by the author’s widow with the request that it be published completely as is. This is a shame since some judicious editing would have made it both more readable and relevant.Perhaps there was a good reason these essays remained unpublished during Corbin’s life…although it's clear that from his widow's point of view they make an appropriate, even loving, offering to his memory.3+ stars.

I love bacon and i love cookbooks. So the two combined is a no brainer. I saw the book in a bookstore and liked the recipes i read. So after receiving it from Amazon i am happy with the book. 2 negatives for me. The photos all have kind of orange tints to the them reminiscent of older cookbooks. More importantly is the manner in which the recipes are written. I love a little history of where and when recipes were created. However, i don't want a step by step description of trial and errors where you have to read so much to figure out the actual cooking step.

These are very innovative recipies that include bacon and Jennifer shows me a lot of things thatr I can do with them hence I'am very greatful. you all want to know a good trick. put your bacon in a electric smoker for an hour it comes out really good. and even safe to eat. Nothing too special since we all know that bacon goes great with anything. For the price is reasonable. some decent tricks are shown here I suppose you can buy it if you want to dig a little deeper.

I have liked bacon for as long as I can remember. My Mom liked it, too and when I was growing up, we ate a lot of it, probably because it was inexpensive back then. Mostly for breakfast and always fried crisp. I think the only exception to breakfast bacon was bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwiches, which happen to be my mother's favorite sandwich. Bacon was one of the first foods I learned to cook, again, fried crisp. Which brings me to this book. Here are many other wonderful ways to use bacon that I would never have dreamed of. Thank you, Ms. Pearsall for expanding my knowledge of my favorite food.

If you love bacon, and who doesn't? (Apologies to my friends of the Jewish Religion) This cook book is for you. Some really wonderful recipes. A couple I highly recommend are the bacon wrapped meat loaf (really outstanding) and the bacon mac 'n cheese. These are not exclusive, just getting started cooking out of this book, but so far, no disappointments!

A

LUVIN BACON

This is a novelty book more tha a cook book. The author attempts to be witty. If nothing else, it does stimulate the pioneer in the reader to experiment.

I live in Georgia and am an avid paddler. This is an excellent and as far as I can tell an up to date reference book for paddling in the state. I agree with their ratings and comments for the sections of rivers I have paddled, and especially with their reminders to make sure we all respect the rights of landowners. Well done.

Looks good and seems to be very much to the point considering the little knowledge I have about rivers and kayaking/canoeing.Hope to put it to use with grandchildren soon!

Just what I was looking for to find good rivers to paddle and put in places. It contains so much information. Very happy with this purchase.

Great book for kayaking. Lots of information.

This book is excellent, providing maps, coordinates and statistics about each of the creeks and rivers. Very valuable for any Georgia paddler. I love it. Do not believe the negative reviews.

A ton of great information!

Great Book!

I've checked my paddles out so many times, the pages are beginning to curl. I love it!
